10 tips for how to avoid a scam:

1. Scammers pretend to be from the government or an organization you know.

2. Scammers tend to tell you there is a problem or a prize involving money.

3. Scammers pressure you to take immediate action before you have time to think.

4. Scammers will tell you to pay them in a specific way such as gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, or even send you a fake check to deposit.

5. Never give your personal or financial information to anyone over the phone or email that you were not expecting to hear from.

6. Block unwanted calls, text messages, and emails.

7. If you get an email or text message from a company you do business with and you think it’s real, it’s still best not to click on any links. Instead, contact them using a website you know is trustworthy.

8. Look for misspelled words and grammatical errors contained in any messages.

9. Look at the email address and/or phone number from which you received the message from to help determine if it could potentially be from a scammer.

10. Before taking any action, talk to someone you trust.
