When we established our biotech division, Create Biomedicines, we did not choose the name lightly. We were inspired by the biblical account of creation in the Book of Genesis, where the world began with a void:
"The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”…
…Then He formed man out of the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and antibodies became a living drug.
This is the exact context of Create Biomedicines today. If you look at our proposed research site near the Fendall Campus in Liberia, West Africa, you will see that same void, filled with bushes.
We do not yet have the resources that conventional wisdom says you need to start. We are operating in a space where the technology is yet to be built and the team is still a dream.
But history has shown that the most transformative movements do not begin with abundance; they begin with a word and a will. At Create Biomedicines, we are inspired by the ultimate act of creation: bringing order to chaos.
Currently, our chaos consists of non-existent infrastructure and technological hurdles that seem insurmountable. Yet, we have taken the first step in moving from 0 to 1 by securing one acre of land and a mission that declares our intent to the world.
We believe that if you want to bridge the bio-manufacturing gap in Africa, you don’t wait for the bridge to appear; you start laying the stones yourself.
This is a matter of ultimate success or failure, but even if we fail, we intend to fail big. By daring to build in this void, we are ensuring that the next generation will be inspired to pick up the baton and finish what we started.
As JFK famously put it, we choose to do these things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.
At Trillion Cells, our slogan is Fight Dogma. To us, dogma represents the limiting beliefs that say this is impossible.
This is a fresh start, a white space to innovate, and we call on every battle-ready soldier willing to fight those limitations to jump on board.
Come let’s make history together.
