The FreeBSD Foundation has joined the Open Source Initiative (OSI), the Apereo Foundation, and the Open Source Technology Improvement Fund (OSTIF) in issuing a joint statement on age-attestation requirements for operating systems.
As proposals advance in California and other jurisdictions, policymakers must understand how open source software is built, distributed, and maintained. Requirements that do not reflect these realities risk unintended consequences for maintainers and the broader ecosystem.
We support thoughtful policy discussions that protect users while preserving the sustainability of open source development.

We’re excited to welcome another student contributor to the FreeBSD community.

Please join us in welcoming Sourojeet Adhikari, who recently shared that he’ll be joining the FreeBSD Foundation as an intern. As part of his work, Sourojeet is currently exploring “Porting ROCm from Linux to FreeBSD”, an ambitious and highly technical project focused on GPU computing support.

Student contributors, internships, and programs like Google Summer of Code continue to play an important role in open source by helping new developers gain hands-on experience while contributing to real-world technology.

These opportunities not only support the next generation of contributors but also help strengthen the broader FreeBSD ecosystem.

Sourojeet also shared a technical blog post documenting his progress and early development experience working with FreeBSD and ROCm: https://racha.ca/myPosts/ROCmFreeBSD_pt1.html

Welcome to the community, Sourojeet. We’re excited to follow your journey and see where the project goes next.

We’re proud to support the UN Open Source Principles as an endorser through Open Source United. United Nations

For more than 30 years, the FreeBSD Project and Foundation have supported open collaboration, transparency, and community-driven development, principles that continue to shape secure and reliable infrastructure used around the world today.

Open source succeeds because of the people and organizations committed to building technology openly, sharing knowledge, and supporting long-term sustainability across the ecosystem. We’re honored to stand alongside other organizations supporting these principles.

We’re proud to share that the FreeBSD Foundation has joined the Open Source Security Foundation (OpenSSF) as an Associate Member.

As noted in the Linux Foundation’s latest quarterly momentum update, OpenSSF continues to expand its global community and advance practical security resources across the open source ecosystem.

“As a critical component of the global digital infrastructure, we believe FreeBSD must be part of the security discussions shaping the future of open source. Joining the OpenSSF will enable us to collaborate with others to help protect the software the world depends on.”— Deb Goodkin, Executive Director, FreeBSD Foundation.

We look forward to collaborating with the OpenSSF community to strengthen the resilience and sustainability of open-source security worldwide.

Happening today!

Anne Dickison, Deputy Director of the FreeBSD Foundation, joins Katie Steen-James (Open Source Initiative ) and Margaret Tucker (GitHub) for a GitHub Maintainer Month panel on age assurance laws and what they mean for open-source maintainers.

The discussion will cover developments in the U.S., Brazil, and Europe, and what developers need to understand as policy conversations evolve.

The FreeBSD Foundation is participating to ensure open-source realities are represented and that maintainers are not navigating regulatory shifts alone.

The new freebsd.org is live.

The updated FreeBSD website delivers a cleaner design, improved navigation, and a stronger foundation for the Project’s future.

The new site makes it easier to:
• Get started with FreeBSD
• Access documentation and downloads
• Explore core technologies like ZFS, bhyve, and Jails
• Connect with the FreeBSD community

Congratulations to everyone who contributed to making this happen. Your work helps ensure FreeBSD remains accessible, cohesive, and ready for what’s next.

We appreciate Edwin Kremer’s thoughtful reflections on 'Integrated by Design" by Vivian Voss.

The book explores what it means for FreeBSD to be an integrated operating system, a complete system built, tested, and released as a cohesive whole, and how that architectural model differs from the assembled distribution model common in the Linux ecosystem.

It’s encouraging to see the FreeBSD design philosophy articulated so clearly: coherence, predictability, least astonishment, and long-term stability.
For those curious about the architectural differences between FreeBSD and Linux and why they matter in practice, this book offers both philosophical context and hands-on exploration.

Thank you to Vivian Voss for contributing to the broader understanding of FreeBSD’s design principles.
