When was the last time you took a peek at your homepage and how it might work better to encourage engagement?

Most website homepages need to be effective in attracting, connecting, and bonding with potential clients and customers first (working to support the Know, Like, and Trust phases of the buyer’s journey).

Here’s a quick teardown of a site where I point out a few places where this organization could make some adjustments to their homepage to help it work better for them.

Want us to take a peek at your site? Drop us a line (https://relishstudio.com/connect/) with your URL and we’ll check it out.

Google warned us recently that there are some big changes coming in 2025 (some would suggest that they are already being rolled out) that will affect search and how brands get found in the new year.

With the move to leveraging AI and users’ behaviors, Google continues to explore this area of technology to deliver more accurate information.

Where we once made gains through content creation and keyword focus, we expect significant adjustments to be required in our search engine optimization strategy in the future to continue driving engagement.

You’ll hear a lot about “branded search” in the coming months, with a focus on delivering value tied to your brand to gain influence and capture audience attention.

This will fundamentally change the way that content is delivered, and there’s still a lot to be learned when it comes to how to capitalize on these new trends.

We’re working hard to stay on top of these trends, and I’d expect a renewed focus on paid search, gated content, and leveraging “known” traffic opportunities coming down the pike to stay relevant in the new year.

Big changes are coming—don’t get left behind. Drop us a line and stay ahead of what’s next in SEO: https://relishstudio.com/connect/

One of the easiest ways to spread your story to a wider audience is to enlist others to share it for you.

Create relationships (or even more formal referral partnerships) with other individuals or tangentially aligned business leaders (those who share an audience… think hairdressers if you run a nail salon) so you can easily reach audiences that otherwise might be more challenging to target.

Warm introductions from credible sources enable you to close sales more quickly since people are more willing to follow their friends’ advice, as there is already implicit trust built in.

So think of ways you can enlist your network to make introductions, and then make it as easy as possible for them to do so.

When wandering around the woods, one pretty frequently stumbles upon old “stuff” that was discarded years ago by the mining community.

I like to grab these items and turn them into something useful.

This removes some trash from the landscape and creates a new use for something that otherwise would continue to contaminate the landscape.

These planters were made from several found objects, including a couple of old rough-cut 2x4s and a can of beans (or something).

What did you contribute to the beautification of the world today (either by picking up something discarded or making something new… or both!)?

Bonus question: What did you do today to help beautify the world—by picking up something discarded, making something new, or both? We’d love to hear about it. Feel free to drop us a line. https://relishstudio.com/connect/

Whether that’s growing a business, crafting goods for your customers, or creating a song, poem, or even just a thought you keep to yourself, humans thrive on creativity.

That’s why I encourage creation.

Ah, the old Bait and Switch.

I was just asked to join a podcast as a guest.

Like other shows, this one asked me to spend some time filling out a pre-interview form, which required about 10 minutes of my time to complete.

Once I had filled in all the info, I was directed to a page that said, “Hey! Instead of an interview, how about we hop on a 15-minute call where I can help you with your business.” (Then received an email with the same suggestion.)

Hard pass. Unsubscribe.

Don’t waste people’s time with a bait and switch.

People have been using ChatGPT for search for a while now. With the announcement that the platform is making a strong play in this space, the search is about to get even more interesting.

Certainly, Google has announced that they, too, are making changes in the space. We'll all need to make some adjustments and ongoing changes, which we'll need to pay attention to keep sites relevant.

Three items one should consider on existing sites and new site build-outs:

1. Pay attention to your robots.txt file: Your website’s robots.txt should specifically allow OAI-SearchBot while maintaining separate permissions for different OpenAI crawlers. In addition to this basic configuration, websites must ensure proper indexing by Bing and maintain a clear site architecture.

2. Content attribution needs to be fine-tuned: Make sure all referenced content includes a proper citation (this is called "Source Attribution"). Your Source Sidebar provides reference links for verification. This is another attribution you should optimize.

3. Keep these changes in mind: Be consistent. Content freshness affects visibility. Pages behind paywalls can still be cited, so this opens up opportunities or challenges depending upon how you intend to use these citations.

Google is still the elephant in the proverbial room when it comes to search. This move by ChatGPT (owned by Microsoft) makes Bing more relevant.

Google Business Profile optimation is an excellent way to get your organization to show up more effectively in search results – particularly if you have a local focus.

For local searches on Google, often your GBP listing is the first, non-paid opportunity to show up for your audience. Many businesses don’t do a great job of optimizing their profiles making tweaking your listing for “local pack” results a must-do to improve your performance.

Here are a few recommendations for adjusting your listing:

Add content to your listing a couple of times per week. Think of your GBP as a secondary “blog” for your organization and ad updates regularly.

Improve your listing performance by including FAQs. You should see gains in your results placement by answering questions a few times per month.

Embed descriptive text or your logo in your images. Once in awhile, add content to your images since Google can now read this information and use it to showcase your organization.

Google presents results based on business hours. If someone is doing a search for the products or services you offer outside of your business hours, Google may not show your GBP as a result. If you are seeking to be found after hours, make sure you list your business as “open” 24/7.

Marketing can be scary. Especially when you don’t have a plan. Most DIY marketers (and, to be honest, many marketing firms) just hop in the deep end when getting started promoting their brand or their clients’ brands.

At Relish, we believe firmly in, “Strategy before tactics.” As tempting as it is to just get started – building a site, putting out stuff on social media, sending emails, creating blog posts… without a plan, you may not wind up where you want to go.

That’s why we offer our Total Online Presence Audit.

This great audit helps our clients get on track (sometimes, back on track) with their marketing with an assessment of where they are, what their marketplace and competitors are doing, and what actionable tactics based on strategy they can implement to ensure that they take the shortest route to their desired destination.

If this sounds like a program that you would be interested to discuss in more detail, comment T**A to this post and we’ll get a call on the schedule.

Are you struggling with your Google Business Profile?

Often, businesses get “de-listed” for various reasons and need to get reinstated. When this happens, Google usually asks for a video to demonstrate ownership and validate your address. Here’s a walk-thru on how to create that video:

1) Go to Google dot com slash business on a computer (while logged in with your company email/Google account). Log in if you need to do so.

2) Once you log in, you should see a screen with a “Get Verified” button. Click that.

3) The next screen will ask you to enter your address… please put in the company address EXACTLY as it appears elsewhere (in your GBP profile, on your site, etc.).

4) The next few screens will provide instructions on what to do and guidelines for what to include in the video. Keep advancing until you get to the point where it asks you to scan a QR code on your phone. Do so, and the next screen should allow you to start recording.

5) Using a phone (again, that’s logged into the company account), start your video by clearly showing the business address/house number. Then proceed to the entrance of your business. If you can include branded work vehicles present in front of the building, that is a plus. Then, film yourself unlocking the building or office to prove to Google that you are a person of authority for the business. Lastly, show off the “tools of the trade” used – PT equipment, roofing tools and products, drafting tables, massage chairs, computers, etc.

6) When done, hit “Stop Recording” and then “Upload Video” to finish: That’s it!

In September, I took some time off to get out into nature with Jeff Kinsey (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jeffreykinsey/). This much-needed break gave me some time to recharge, reflect, and relax. My intentionality around this adventure allowed me to step completely away from business for a few days and gain new perspectives on life.

It was SO worth it.

Returning from three days backpacking in the Desolation Wilderness with Jeff, I extended my time away and eased my transition back to working life with a “life list” train ride back to Denver from Cali.

30+ hours on the California Zephyr was an experience I’ll cherish.

The extended adventure provided me the opportunity to not even be able to be rushed.

Slowing things down was exactly what I needed. An extended hike to camp the first day dovetailed into a “do nothing” second day, where Jeff and I scrambled around the massive rock features and high-alpine lakes west of Lake Tahoe. Another mellow hike out on the last day created a full experience where we didn’t *have* to be anywhere at any particular time. Refreshing, to say the least.

Extending the “do nothing” ethos to an evening in Napa hosted by Lisa M. Mae (https://www.linkedin.com/in/lisammae/ ) was just lovely, and the train ride home capped the adventure by continuing to slow things down and ease my transition back to the office.

My key takeaways:

1. Make time for yourself where you *can’t* allow “normal life” to intrude.

2. Do something new regularly. Novelty is an important component of growth and learning.

3. Slow down. We’re inundated with stuff coming at us from every direction. Taking time to slow things down purposely allows you to understand better what’s most important and let go of those elements of your experience that aren’t serving you well.
