Fast Fix #197
Voice Isolation for FaceTime

How many times have you had to find a quieter place for a phone or video call? It’s a downside of working from home.

It’s hard on the other end too. Asking them to repeat themselves while you guess what they’re saying.

FaceTime has a new option: voice isolation. Grab some earbuds and you’re ready to go.

During your FaceTime call, open Control Center (swipe down from the top right). Tap Mic Mode, then Voice Isolation.

Have a nice chat with your brother in New Jersey - even with a Nintendo competition in the background.

Weeks Away: Masked Face ID

Mask mandates threw us back to the dark ages. Face ID has been useless for two years.

FINALLY, Masked Face ID is coming!

An upper-face program detailed enough to secure iPhones is in Beta testing (volunteer testing program).

iOS 15.4 is the update to watch for.

Restrictions are decreasing, but masks are still required for government and government-regulated facilities, medical offices and many other locations.

If Masked Face ID is a must for you, now’s the time to upgrade. This release is sure to cause a big surge in iPhone sales. The oldest model technologically able to allow these exacting scans is the iPhone 12.

iPhone and Apple Pay access without unmasking is huge, eliminating the hundred or more times a day we punch a code to open our phones.

Happily, your iPhone will prompt and walk you through setup. You don’t even need to be wearing a mask.

Not a good time? Do it later. (Settings > Face ID & Passcode)

Glasses block part of your upper face, so wearers may have a harder time training their phones. Multiple pairs? Each is different and must be added separately.

Overwhelmed? Swing by your local Verizon or AT&T store. They’ll help you get it done.

Barring a complete hairstyle change, you’ll never have to mess with it again.

Masked Face ID eliminates lots of daily hassle.

Fast Fix #195
Widespread Critical Fix

Have you ever struggled to see? If not, this first issue may seem minor.

Thousands of visually impaired users were suddenly denied access to their iPhones. The Braille display stopped working. iOS 15.3.1 lets them do what we take for granted.

The second part of the update affects EVERYONE.

Hackers screw up lots of lives. Maybe they like the power rush, getting into secure areas. Or think they’re getting something for nothing.

This update prevents zero-day attacks - a way hackers use the internet to get on your phone. Security update iOS 15.3.1 blocks those attacks.

If you own an iPhone 6S or later, you need this update.

Both issues explain why Apple call iOS 15.3.1 a critical fix.

Fast Fix #194
Stealth Cookies

Today, smart preschoolers web surf with the best of us. But they don’t see the bigger picture.

Even Cookie Monster would be disgusted with internet cookies.

‘Preload Top Hit’ is a Safari feature to help make life easier. Like someone finishing your sentences, it guesses what you want based on popular demand and fills it in as you spell.

Did you know that every guess adds its own cookies?

G? Google’s cookies. A? Amazon. S? Spotify.

But you have power to stop preloading cookies. There’s a switch for that. Turn it off and guesses will appear, but not preload the websites.

Try it. Settings > Safari > Preload Top Hit > turn off. You may not even notice the speed change.

Fast Fix #193
Tip for Lazy Saturdays & Midnight Reads

Despite great vision, it’s always frustrated me to open Safari and all of a sudden, the print’s microscopic. Why is that?

No-squint reading came to Control Center with iOS 15, with customized text size for any app.

Great for catching up on texts on a lazy Saturday morning before your contacts are in. And for middle-of-the-night reads when your brain keeps running, no matter what you do.

For Baby Boomers, it eliminates time lost while hunting down runaway reading glasses.

Just tap the Text Size button in Control Center. Beneath the size slider, choose to apply your change to just the app you have open (Messages, Kindle, etc.) or to All Apps.

Not finding the Text Size button in your Control Center? Fix that with just a couple of taps. Go to Settings > Control Center and add it.

This little change helps a lot. Thanks, Apple!

Fast Fix #192
Best Look

Let’s face it. Some of us look horrible in light gray, but that used to be the required dress code to Memojis. It was dreary and drab. Not anymore!

New! Our Memojis have pattern options, and different colors, with sliders.

I’m so happy to get out of prison clothes! My alter ego finally lost its zombie look.

Hit the three dots in your Memoji lineup and tap Edit to get a new look. I think I’ll go red for Valentines Day.

You’re So Fascinating!

Puppies are little powerhouses. Full speed ahead until fall over for a nap. My little Boston would play until he was wobbly with exhaustion, waiting for the next throw of the ball. Those eyes just begged for more.

ProMotion ups the energy level - Apple’s answer for sluggish iPhones.

It lets your iPhone keep up with what you’re doing. ProMotion iPhones check to see what you’re adding to your screen 120 times a second, and make changes.

It’s a Refresh Rate of 120 Hertz, giving you:

-Crisper Photos
-Higher quality Video experience
-Smoother Web Surfing
-Faster Screen transitions
-Better Gaming

ProMotion also has a way to conserve battery life. Frame rate only kicks up when you need it.

iPad Pros and both iPhone 13 Pro models have Pro Motion.

It’s puppy power - without the naps.

Fast Fix #190
Home (Screen) Organization

Brittney reorganizes her living room almost weekly, keeping her apartment fresh and interesting with a constantly changing view.

Me, I’m just happy my house is neat and dusted.

Customizing iPhone real estate has gotten easier than locating cute seasonal throw pillows on Amazon. We have so many apps, widgets and Focus options to choose from.

Here are the easiest ways to add apps and widgets directly to your Home Screen.

Apps: use the search bar to locate an app, drag and drop it onto your Home Screen.

Widgets: Long press an empty spot on the page, tap the + (upper left), scroll to the right widget, select.

It’s nice to get everything set up the way you want it.

Fast Fix #189
Spatial Audio takes on Dolby Atmos

My friend Tony got surround Sound when it first came out. The cannon in the 1812 Overture was right there! On another soundtrack, an airplane sounded like it flew right over you as it took off.

Amazing!

Spatial Audio is how Apple uses Dolby surround sound.

It takes music and soundtracks and separates the parts so it sounds like it’s coming from many different directions.

The drums may sound like they’re coming from one part of the room, woodwinds from another, and vocals from several places. It can even sound like it’s above or behind you.

Spatial Audio came to movies and TV shows (iOS 14). Then to Apple TV 4K, AirPods Pro and Max. Macs with an M1chip and newer iPads also use Spatial Audio.

Apple went further with AirPods and mobile devices. The software adjusts when you move you head or change your position relative to the device. So you always get optimal sound.

Sound quality was the first thing I noticed about my new iPad Pro. It’s like being in a movie theater. The difference just blew me away!

Fast Fix #188
Navigating Through Roadblocks

iOS 15 hasn’t been trouble-free. As usual, we had to wait for Facebook and other third party apps to update so they’d be compatible again.

Meanwhile, apps crashed, flipping us out when we tried to open them.

There have also been software problems (bugs), not abnormal with the huge amount of code in software. Testing to eliminate bugs is one reason it takes so long to release new updates. Here are areas that have had bug problems.

Music: Apple Music streaming could cause heat buildup and battery drain. Until there’s a fix, avoid it by downloading the music you play.

Storage: trouble accessing photos and other things in iCloud storage. My issue seems to have resolved itself, sometime after I powered both devices off and back on.

WiFi Connectivity: turn Airplane Mode off and on. If that doesn’t work, turn your router off and on. It takes a few minutes for WiFi to come back up. The router trick worked for me.

Apple TV: I couldn’t access the Pluto TV app for about a week, until Apple put out a modem update. I had one really frustrating day, but it’s working fine now.

As in nature, there will always be bugs. Unlike the common cold, these will soon be fixed. And we don’t have to buy Kleenex.

Fast Fix #187
Comfort and Joy

You are loved by a lot of people. Friends, family … and a bunch of others you’d never guess.

It’s hard to believe how quickly life can change.

Legacy Contacts (iOS 15.2) lets you designate one or more contacts to be given phone access if you die.

Bad drivers are out there. It will give your family access to photos full of happy memories, as well as practical things like contacts, mail and other info.

Set up Legacy Contacts:
Settings > tap the bar with your name and Apple ID > Password & Security > make sure Two-Factor Authentication is on > scroll and tap Legacy Contact >

Add Legacy Contact > Add Legacy Contact > pick someone from Contacts > tap their cell # or email address > Continue > choose to send a text link (is automatically saved in their phone) or Print a Copy (to keep with your important papers).

Clyde had to hack an iPhone and Mac for me once. It’s not easy.

Give a gift that will save literally weeks of work. They’ll be missing you like crazy.
