Watch out birds!
⚡🛰️ Japan is preparing to attempt something that sounds straight out of a sci-fi movie...
A satellite called OHISAMA — Japanese for “Sun” — is expected to beam solar energy from space directly back to Earth.
Orbiting roughly 400 km above our planet, the experimental spacecraft will collect sunlight using onboard solar panels, convert that energy into microwaves, and transmit it wirelessly to a receiving station in Japan. The amount of power will be small — around 1 kilowatt — but that’s not the point.
The real mission is proving that electricity can be harvested in space and sent back to Earth without cables.
Why does this matter?
Because solar panels in orbit can receive far more sunlight than panels on the ground. No clouds. No storms. No atmospheric losses. And in the future, giant orbital solar stations could potentially deliver clean energy on a scale never before possible.
For decades, the idea of collecting solar power in space was considered impossible. Now, Japan is preparing to test it for real.
And this is only the beginning.
The long-term vision is breathtaking: massive solar power satellites capable of generating gigawatts of electricity and wirelessly transmitting that energy back to Earth. Some future concepts even imagine enormous orbital energy networks supporting entire cities — and eventually helping power humanity's expansion beyond Earth.
A future where part of Earth's electricity comes directly from space may sound unbelievable today.
But so did landing on the Moon.
