Spilled something on your laptop?

The first thing most people want to do is check whether it still works.

That can be one of the worst things you do.

Liquid damage does not always kill a laptop immediately. It may keep running while moisture, sugar, minerals, or other residue is sitting on energized components. Every time you turn it back on, you give that contamination another chance to cause a short.

We took an Xbox Series X all the way apart this time for a full teardown, going down to the motherboard to replace the thermal paste on the APU.

Thermal paste breaks down over time, and once it does, the APU can't transfer heat to the heatsink as efficiently as it should. That usually shows up as a console running hotter or louder than it used to, even if nothing else is wrong with it. Replacing it means getting the console down to the bare motherboard, which is a bigger job than a standard cleaning.

This video walks through that process from a technician's perspective, showing what a full disassembly and repaste actually looks like on this console. It's geared toward people who are already comfortable working on electronics and want to see the process taken all the way to the APU itself, rather than a full step by step tutorial.

We see this kind of wear pretty often on consoles that have been running for a long time, and a repaste is one of the more effective ways to bring performance back without needing a bigger repair. Once you're down to the motherboard, you get a much clearer look at the overall condition of the system too.

We took our Xbox Series X cleaning content a step further this time, walking through what it looks like to remove the internal hardware from the outer shell for a more thorough clean.

A standard surface level cleaning can only reach so much. Once you get into the areas around the fan, heatsink, and other internal components, there is usually a lot more dust and buildup than people expect, especially in consoles that have been running for a while without much maintenance. This video shows that process from a technician's perspective, taking things far enough to really get into those areas without fully disassembling the motherboard itself.

This one is geared toward people who are already comfortable with basic console maintenance and are curious what the next level looks like. It is not meant to be a full tutorial, more of a look at how a deeper clean is actually handled and what goes into it from someone who does this kind of work regularly.

We recently had a customer bring in their Xbox Series X for a routine cleaning, and we turned it into a beginner friendly walkthrough so people who aren't comfortable opening up their own console can see what's actually going on inside.

Xbox Series X consoles pull in a lot of air to keep the internal components cool, and over time that means dust and debris naturally collect around the fan and vents. It's not something you can see from the outside, so most owners don't realize how much has built up until the console is opened. This particular unit had been in regular use for a while, and once we got inside, it was a good example of exactly what that kind of everyday wear looks like.

We kept this video approachable on purpose. A lot of people are hesitant to open up their console because they're worried about doing something wrong, voiding a warranty, or just not knowing where to start. Our goal with this one was to show the process happening in real time, from a technician's perspective, without turning it into a step by step tutorial. It's meant to give you a look at what a professional cleaning actually involves.

An American Time Clock came into the shop completely dead, and after digging into it, we tracked the problem down to a failed transformer.

This is a Master Programmer Plus, the kind of time clock businesses can depend on every day for tracking employee hours. When something like this stops working, it can become a pretty big headache pretty quickly.

Instead of assuming the entire unit was shot, we opened it up, worked through the components, and found the actual point of failure. The transformer was no longer supplying power properly, so we sourced a replacement that matched the original specifications, installed it, and tested the unit.

Back up and running.

This is exactly why we always recommend having older business equipment diagnosed before automatically replacing it. A machine that looks completely dead doesn't necessarily mean the boards are fried or the whole thing belongs in the trash. Sometimes one failed component is enough to take the entire system down.

And with older or specialized equipment like this, replacement isn't always as simple as running to a big-box store and grabbing another one. If it's been working reliably for years and can be repaired correctly, keeping it in service can make a lot more sense than replacing the whole system.
