Today we will cover spoofy emails and ways to spot them. Often times you will receive an email that looks legitimate. The picture below will be our example. However, checking the sender's email address showed the lie. On most android devices this can be done by tapping on the section where the email header. This in turn showed it was not from apple, as apple support is not that email, and it is easy enough to see that one should not do as told.

Now there are other ways to verify information without opening the email if you are unsure.

Logging into the service from their page will also let you see most security issues if any, and can also verify your account is not locked.

With people trying to get access to information that is not theirs it is important to adopt a strategy such as this, it will keep you safe. Even if the email link seems to be legit unless you did something which an email was to be sent to you do not click links, and call the company if necessary.

So a little Public Service Announcement for those following this page. If you ever run into this while surfing the web, do not panic. It's not actually real.
Firstly, Microsoft will never contact you regarding an issue with your computer, nor will any of their agents or representatives. This right away is a sign that it's a scam.
Secondly, Microsoft would never "Disable" your pc. That's a common Myth. Honestly they let you do what you want with your pc, and believe me I've seen some infected pc's. Microsoft never shuts them down.
Lastly, try and close the window if you can. This one closed real easy, clicked an x and it went away. If that's not working then using task manager force close your web browser, this should help. If all else fails, call your local technician and explain the problem. They may have you bring it in to look at it but they will fix it.
These are not warnings that your pc is compromised. They are scams and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Since it's been a while since there was a post I felt a need to state this.
If you're buying a used computer, take these things into thought during your purchase.

No matter how much the seller says it things great, 4gb of ram is insufficent for windows 10. The operating system can use 3.1 to 6 gigs on standby, doing nothing.

Try to avoid any antiques. For those who don't know, for the Intel systems. The first digit of the 4 number identifier for an I series processor is its generation. A three digit identifier is first generation.

Older processors should be avoided. Core 2 duo, core 2 or older. They lack the ability to run a sufficient amount of ram to run the system and they will run very slow, to the point of freezing and crashing.

Lastly, consider the hdd size. Computers have had a minimum 500gb hdd for the last 3 years, 1tb recently if the drive is an hdd. Ssd is different, but be wary of computers with 160gb, 320gb drives. These drives are very old, and while serviceable still their life span is much shorter and more prone to fail.

In light of some events I've noticed lately through work I would like to take the time to make a bit of a announcement.

Making your account secure is your responsibility and yours alone. No one else can be held accountable for accounts being comprimised but yourself. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent these things from happening.

Most email clients now provide two factor authorization, enabling this means even if someone gets your password they still cannot login to the account because, they need a secondary authorization. I.E, a code that is sent to a cell phone via text or approval from an app on a smartphone.

Why is this important? With how much our lives are digital in this current society we live in. Gaining access to an email account is just the beginning. How many emails do you receive to that account? Are you using their cloud service? Do you have accounts that are important to you that can be accessed using this account.

I had a customer who had their account comprimised. They not only lost access to their email, but it was a microsoft account. Their computer was comprimised because of the password changing they could no longer log in, they lost their one drive. And more importantly, several services they use (Amazon, Ebay) were linked to this email and they lost those accounts too. Fortunately, They had not updated their credit card information on the website so no credit fraud occurred.

But it brings up a rather serious topic. Security of your accounts and your own digital safety revolve around you, the user using the tools you're given to protect yourself. Next time you're perusing your email, check the settings to see if you have things like notifications turned on in case of account changes, if you've set up an alternate email and phone, and if they offer two factor authentication. These little changes can mean the difference from doing things like normal and suddenly finding you're a victim of an account takeover.

Received two Lenovo laptops, repairs have begun. The larger one has a screen issue which is either the ribbon cable or the screen itself. The smaller one is finished. Pictures soon.

Finished the first charity repair, the desktop was unfortunately not savable. However, parts that were salvaged from it went towards the second commissioned desktop repair. It's been a busy week here and it'll probably continue to get that way.

Gonna be tired tomorrow at work. Pulling a late nighter on a charity repair. Computer itself is being particularly stubborn, but i'm making headway.

Two Functional pc's in two days, huh. Who knew. Though one is slaving a power supply from my main rig because I don't have a psu for it yet. (Waiting until next paycheck to pick that piece up, then comes the joy of major surgery on both machines) but it's working. tower number two is on it's way to completion and I'm a bit surprised at how easy this is getting.

05/31/2016

Received two custom PC cases over memorial day weekend. Can you say, project PC's? Details to come.
