In 1947, while working as a programmer on the Harvard Mark II computer, Grace Hopper recorded in her log one of the first computing bugs. It was an actual bug, a moth that had been found jammed in one of the relays in of the computer (the Mark II was large enough to fill a room), causing the program to crash. Seventy years later, we’re still trying to figure out how to produce bug-free programs. Hopper went on to invent the first compiler, and her work led to the rise of human-readable programming languages, which are the lifeblood of modern-day software development.
