šŸ’» Designing the frame is only part of the job. What about everything that needs to run through it?

In this episode, ScotCyd demonstrates how Scottsdale's design and engineering software makes it easy to add service holes across multiple steel frames at once.

Select the frames, add the services, and then fine-tune the location of the openings based on the needs of the project. Those details can then become part of the production data used to manufacture the framing components.

It's another example of how planning in the software can simplify work later in production and on the jobsite.

ScotSteel has a LOT under the hood. šŸ‘€ What feature should ScotCyd explore next? Drop your software questions or requests in the comments.

Steel coil decisions can affect everything from engineering and purchasing to fabrication and inventory planning.

The ScotCalc CFS Coil Analyzer helps framing fabricators turn Mill Test Report (MTR) data into useful insights before material ever enters the production line.

Using material properties such as yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, thickness, coating, and chemistry, our free online ScotCalc Coil Analyzer tool provides a preliminary evaluation that can help users:

• Understand applicable AISI S100-16 acceptance criteria • Identify ASTM specifications • Screen material for ductility and weldability • Effectively manage existing coil inventory • Support project scoping and value engineering • Make more informed material decisions for roll forming machines

Whether evaluating new steel coils or making better use of existing coil inventory, the ScotCalc Coil Analyzer adds another layer of information to your steel framing production planning. šŸ—ļø The framing component is roll formed. Now what?

In this episode, ScotCyd takes viewers to the outfeed table of a Scottsdale mobile factory to show what happens as each finished component comes off the machine.

Components can be identified by an optional printer—or, as ScotCyd demonstrates, the old-fashioned Sharpie method works too. From there, the framing can take two different paths: flat packed and wrapped for shipment and panelized at the jobsite, or assembled into transportable wall panels before leaving the factory.

It's a simple part of the process, but good organization at the outfeed helps keep hundreds—or thousands—of individual components moving from production to assembly in the right order.

Roll it. Identify it. Organize it. Build it.

Labor shortages, rising costs, and tighter schedules are pushing the construction industry to rethink conventional framing.

Automated roll forming steel framing technology offers a different approach by moving measuring, punching, cutting, labeling, and other modifications into a controlled manufacturing process. The result? Smaller crews, greater consistency, fewer field modifications, safer processes, and faster installation.

The impact can be significant. In a study by our customer, Schmidt Konstruktion Systems Corp. (SKSC), a 2,465-sq-ft housing unit fabricated and built using our roll forming machines achieved approximately 40% less construction time and 16% lower project cost.

Reducing construction time from 57 hours to 34 hours means that, in nearly the time required to complete one conventionally framed project, businesses could potentially complete almost two comparable projects, doubling their production and revenue.

More production capacity without proportionally increasing the workforce; that’s the power of automation in steel framing. Learn more at https://www.scottsdalesteelframes.com/building-with-steel/reducing-labor-a-better-look-at-roll-forming-vs-conventional-framing.

In light-gauge steel framing, the way seated connections are detailed can make or break the structural performance of a project.

Seated connections are a fundamental component of light-gauge steel framing, especially in systems involving steel trusses, wall panels, and floor assemblies. When properly designed, they provide reliable vertical load support, enhance structural performance, and improve constructability.

Our latest article explores the role of light-gauge steel seated connections in steel framing design, with practical guidance on:

Ā· Using full-profile members for efficient load transfer
Ā· Detailing seated connections across different framing systems
Ā· Integrating these details into roll-forming production for greater performance

Whether you're a steel detailer, structural engineer, or manufacturer, this resource will help you optimize your steel framing design and ensure structural integrity from concept through installation. Designing a cold-formed steel structure starts long before detailed engineering. The new ScotCalc Stud Analyzer helps simplify that process by providing fast preliminary estimates of loads, moments, shear forces, bracing requirements, and recommended SFIA stud sections.

For designers, it reduces manual calculations, compares framing options, and supports value engineering before final engineering verification.

For existing Scottsdale customers, it helps determine whether current roll forming machines can manufacture a project, improves quoting and biding confidence, supports production planning, and identifies opportunities to optimize material usage.

For companies researching new roll forming machines, this tool provides real-world insight into the types of projects they want to build over the next 3, 5, and 10 years, helping match future business goals with the right equipment investment.

The ScotCalc Stud Analyzer has something to offer everyone, but best of all, it is available free as part of Scottsdale's growing online CFS engineering resources.
