Bessie Coleman was the first African American and Indigenous woman to hold a pilot’s license. The very first woman to receive a PhD in the entire world was Sarmiza Bilcescu of Romania. Hedy Lamarr was best known as an American actress but was also crucial to the development of “frequency hopping technology” (what you know today as the Wi-Fi we so keenly rely on). The mathematic genius of Katherine Johnson made the first U.S. crewed spaceflights possible. Romanian-born Elisa Leonida Zamfirescu would go on to become the first female engineer in all of Europe. And American Rosalind Franklin is just now receiving credit for her contribution to the discovery of DNA and RNA.

On this , MHC is honored to celebrate the invaluable contributions women have made to society. This day certainly serves as a moment to celebrate the progress that has been made. But it should also be a reminder of the courage and tenacity it takes to overcome the unique challenges that women continue to face every day, all around the world.

As a global company with some of our best talent residing in Romania, we're always so interested to learn about the customs and traditions of our Romanian team. And today marks a very special day on their calendar that we'd love to share with you.

On March 1st, people mark the first day of spring with a “Mărțișor” - a small object worn on the chest like a brooch, usually comprised of red and white silk strings. The red and white strings are said to represent “funia anululi”- the year’s rope, intertwining summer and winter and symbolizing fortune and good health to come for the wearer. Oftentimes, charms are attached to the Mărțișor (such as coins or cross pendants). And as the tradition evolved, they began to take the form of familiar shapes such as four-leaf clovers, ladybugs, cupcakes, elephants, etc. The term Mărțișor comes from the old folk name for March (martie in modern Romanian) and translates to “little March”.

The Mărțișor is meant to be worn from the first new moon of March until the next significant holiday for a community (usually falling anywhere between March 9th to May 1st) or until the first fruit tree flowers. When removed, the custom is to tie the Mărțișor to the branch of a tree or hang it on a fence as a gift to birds returning home from their winterly trip south.

Team MHC is excited to celebrate this holiday as we look forward to the arrival of warmer weather and blossoming trees. May everyone enjoy a lovely Mărțișor on this first day of March!
