Posting this badass photo of myself while wearing sweatpants at home means I can channel that energy right?! 🥴

For those of you new to this space, my name is Liz and I’m the founder of Big Wave Studio - a branding and web design studio that helps small biz owners make waves online 🌊. I consider myself equal parts creative director, guiding force, and cheerleader for your business and the big dreams you have. Through strategic visuals I help you bring all the puzzle pieces together, always keeping in mind the “big picture” plan and how your branding plays into that.

But enough about the studio, lets share a little about me, Liz:

- I’m originally from Buffalo, NY and recently moved back here after living in NYC for 4 years.
- I went to college for Communications and Spanish. I thought I’d work in an advertising agency or a marketing department. While I’m not doing that, I feel that my business raps into those fields.
- My partner Iván is from Colombia and our big dream is to one day work fully remote and split our time between the US and Colombia.
- I’m an observer through and through. Whether that’s working in a restaurant, walking through an airport, or reading magazines, I love to pay attention and absorb people and style.
- I hope to launch and e-commerce brand in 2021.

As I write this, I’m working on my website to launch for you all in just a few days. It truly is a labor of love and feels like a long time coming (lots left to do 🤓). I cannot wait to share it with you all and am excited to bring you along for the journey. ✨

We are constantly recreating ourselves. If you pause to think about it, it’s such a cool concept. Each day we have yet another opportunity to evolve, grow, adapt, and reinvent our style.

I think what maybe most excites me about my business, is that there will always be that space to keep re-inventing. The slightest tweak of a color or a large change in the creative direction of the company - the possibilities are infinite, if we allow our minds to stay open.

As I prep for my website launch (just a few more days) I am giving my systems and presentations a refresh and landed on this updated mood board for Big Wave Studio. I’m obsessed.

But the best part is that it doesn’t have to be like this forever. Branding goes beyond a logo and colors, it’s more about how you make people FEEL after working with them. For me that’s clarity, a sense of calm, and powerful... all feelings that I absorb near the ocean, hence the studio name.

These all tap into my brand pillars; customer service first, always and empowering small business owners. Knowing the WHY behind your business can better help you make creative choices and in this way you’ll never feel lost no matter how your business evolves along the way. 🌊

Branding photography matters 🔥

It’s one thing to design a beautiful creative direction and brand, but then to use it in tandem with photography like these works of art from — pure magic. ✨ Invest in branding photography, work with collaborative artists like Sarah and Veronica who execute a creative direction that aligns with your vision. You’ll thank me later.

Pulled a long work day and about to pull a longer work night, but keeping these words in mind and excited about what’s coming ✨

Also, to all my night owls out there HEYYYY 👋🏼 And to all my early birds, will you share your secrets?! I want to be a morning person sooo badly, but I make the best stuff late at night. If you’re a former night person turned morning lover, spill your secrets 🤓

Hire people more talented than you are. ✨

That’s my biggest takeaway from the collaborative photo shoot for Big Wave Studio. None of this would have been possible without the talented women who helped bring this vision to life. There’s something truly special about connecting creatives that fosters innovation and collaboration. If you think you can get to the other side faster by yourself, think again. Build connections online, reach out to your people, make magic together and you’ll be surprised at how far you can go.

And in honor of finally sharing these incredible images, I’m excited to announce that my new website will launch in less than two weeks! Until then, head to link in my bio to get on the list and be the first to know when the site goes live 🌊

Dreamy vibes for this Friday ☁️

One of the first step in the branding process involves mood boards. I always ask my clients for a Pinterest board of at least 60 pins that range from photography and fonts, to packaging and interiors — anything that speaks to them about their brand. I always tell them to not overthink it and pin intuitively. It should feel a little messy and it's my job to take that and extract the 3 possible creative directions.

Usually upon seeing the selection I can roughly tell which images will go together. This is where the magic happens. 💫 I bring everything into Illustrator and start my role as digital collage maker, grouping and pairing and messing around with placements until it just clicks.

Presenting 3 possibilities helps my clients to see the potentials they've created in their head come to life cohesively. I find that a lot of folks love various styles, but once they're grouped together it becomes obvious which direction they want to go in.

These 3 boards are from the first phase of the branding development with . An all natural skincare company, Nunoa stands for simple, natural skincare that promotes ingredient transparency and skincare education. The finished logo is live on their page!

What's your favorite of the 3? Share in the comments below! Mine is #2 because of 😉

Throwback to this quick and early branding session with before heading into work! We met in Dumbo around 7 AM to avoid tourists and crowds, snagged some photos in front of the Brooklyn Bridge and this cute brick wall, and then enjoyed a coffee. The session was maybe 15 minutes at most and now my friend has some fresh headshots in her content arsenal. That’s how branding photos, especially lifestyle headshot sessions should be — fast and fun! ⁣

I’ve been thinking of some ideas as NYC begins to move further along in the phases of re-opening post-Covid. A while back, I talked about doing a free headshot day for food-industry workers furloughed or laid off due to Covid. I’d like to expand this to invite Black Folks to this event as well. I don’t know about logistics yet, but I’m thinking sometime in July, somewhere cute outside so we can maintain social distancing, and everyone would get 3 free edited photos with the option to purchase more from the full gallery. ⁣

If you’re into this idea or have thoughts on how to make this offering better, slide into the DMs ❤️

Lets work collectively to re-wire our brains and the white lens through which we view everything. Part of that starts with our spending and hiring powers. Whether that's taking your Sephora beauty budget and trying new products from a black beauty brand or hiring a black web designer for your business refresh, how we use our dollars is just one of the ways to take action to uplift black brands and creatives. ⁣

My friend put together a list of black creatives in the commercial photography industry. Additionally, I’ve compiled a spreadsheet that showcases black entrepreneurs, business coaches, branding and web designers, content creators as well as food brands, beauty brands, and wellness brands. ⁣

Theses resources are intended to help folks remove the excuse of "not knowing a black creative or brand". They are not a crutch and they are not perfect. They will continue to expand and evolve and hopefully challenge our white perspectives. The goal is to constantly question how we can better uplift black creatives and business owners.
