“A 25-year-old woman with type 1 diabetes started producing her own insulin less than three months after receiving a transplant of reprogrammed stem cells” (extracted from her own body)

Now, a year has passed since the stem cell injection.
No dangerous spikes and drops in blood glucose levels.
No issues at all.

“I can eat sugar now,” - said the woman.

“They’ve completely reversed diabetes in the patient, who was requiring substantial amounts of insulin beforehand.” - James Shapiro (the University of Alberta).

“That’s remarkable. If this is applicable to other patients, it’s going to be wonderful.” - Daisuke Yabe (Kyoto University).

She is the first person with type 1 diabetes to receive this kind of transplant.

"Every day, 22 people die in the U.S. alone waiting for a compatible organ for transplant. For those with autoimmune disorders, even a matched organ won't last, as their immune system will still reject it. What if we could make universal stem cells to generate cells, tissues, and organs compatible with everyone? On a first step towards that, we performed an extreme immune makeover in human pluripotent stem cells using CRISPR/Cas9 to delete 4 rejection genes and add 3 tolerance genes. Tissues derived from these stem cells were protected from both adaptive and innate immune responses. Cars can last a long time if one keeps replacing the parts. So could people."
