I have a PSA regarding generative Ai artwork for custom design requests/branding/team stores.
We all know that AI is everywhere.
Google asks follow up questions now, you don't have to proofread your own emails any more, and Facebook captions are a quick prompt and a click away. Nice!
However, in the Art world AI isn't just a gentle helper in the corner. It's also a thief. Generative AI has to scour the internet and steal from human creators to create those prompted images.
I know - Why does a T-shirt business care about Ai design? Well, I've been a digital artist for 20+ years. I started back in the days of GIMP and Corel Studio and when you could buy your Photoshop software and own it without a subscription (lol)... I taught myself how to translate ideas into fantasy images and create so many fun worlds with the stroke of a pen on a little Wacom bamboo tablet.
Now days, my Wacom tablet was upgraded to an ipad and most of the work I create for the public is typography style work focusing on spirit wear. And I absolutely love when I get to work on branding and logo design for a small business. But at heart I am still an artist.
So this is the official statement.
We will not use/print ai "Logos" or images when creating custom designs, team stores, branding etc.
Why?
1. Ai steals from human artists, like me.
2. Ai designs are not made to print and I cannot control the quality of them. (This is just the short version - there's so much more when it comes to design quality, layers, ERRORS, etc)
3. Most Ai designs all look the same. I want to see you have an original work made just for you - not just something that many other people have because it came from the same generative process.
4. Because I can make it, or find an artist who has!
