No, training someone to defend themselves with and without a weapon is very important.
However, ensuring the company, organization understands their respective stares use of force laws and employees qualifies individuals to teach their staff is also vitally important.
Training is a thing!
The number of students we have that truly believe that if the feel the need, they can use deadly force...No, I was not there, nope; don't have all the facts.
However, civilian or not, you better have a good reason for using any type of force, especially deadly force.
SECURITY GUARD CHARGED WITH MURDER:
Training security guards on the law is more valuable than training them to shoot.
Tyron Henton was a security officer at La Gran Plaza shopping mall. He saw someone smashing a kiosk with a blunt object attempting to steal jewelry.
He took his gun out and shot him. The man stumbled across the street and died.
Tyron has been charged with murder.
Texas Penal Code §9.42 actually DOES permit deadly force to protect property under certain NARROWLY defined circumstances, including some robberies and nighttime thefts.
But there's a HUGE distinction between:
1. Protecting someone's life from an imminent deadly threat.
2. Shooting someone to prevent the destruction or theft of property.
The second situation has additional legal requirements. Just because someone is destroying property doesn't automatically authorize deadly force. If you're an armed officer and you don't know the law, you're in the wrong industry. If you're an owner and you don't go over this information with your crew often, an test them, you're also in the wrong industry.
