Ryann Bauer started Rock Bottom Ranch with a lifelong love for Texas Longhorns that began with a book she read as a little girl. What she didn't know then was that Longhorns weren't just a Texas thing, and the moment she found that out, she was hooked.

In October of 2022 she was introduced to the owners of Painted Outlaw Ranch and went to a meeting that confirmed everything. She called her husband Jay while he was on a hunting trip and told him they were getting Longhorns. He said no, they weren't set up for that. She told him she had already confirmed that they were.

They started with two little heifer calves. Rock Bottom Ranch is now approaching 50 head of registered cattle on the Rush River in Maiden Rock, Wisconsin, at the bottom of a hill in the Rush River Valley, on a property that is beautiful enough to make even the harshest Wisconsin winters worth it. Flying B Longhorns operates on a centennial family farm in Lone Wolf, Oklahoma that sits directly on the path of the Great Western Cattle Trail. Between 1874 and 1893, over seven million Texas Longhorns were driven through that exact stretch of Southwest Oklahoma. There is a stone monument down the road from the farm marking where the trail came through. Hunter Boelte's family has owned the land for over a hundred years, running black Angus cattle on it for most of that time. Three years ago, registered Texas Longhorns came back to ground that had seen their ancestors pass through more than a century before.

Hunter and Jordan Boelte have built Flying B into a boutique registered program of around 55 head in those three years, with bulls already earning recognition at some of the most prominent events in the breed. Cody Robbins has spent nearly thirteen seasons on the Outdoor Channel chasing trophy big game across North America. Two years ago, Eddie Driskill decided to build something with Texas Longhorns, and today D&D Longhorns carries his family's name in more ways than one. It comes from the Driskill line and Lisa's maiden name, Davis, built to last across a family, not just a season.

"We just love the longhorns," Eddie says. "We are out there every day giving them treats and petting them. They are our babies."

Eddie’s favorite animal, Ellie Mae, is proof of how far a first heifer can go. She was the very first calf Eddie and Lisa ever owned and she’s been a favorite ever since.

Seven years ago, Mike and Kali Smith sold their refrigeration business with 150 employees and stepped away to spend more time on their 300-acre ranch in Burnett, Texas. They weren't planning on going all in, they thought they'd slow down for a bit and catch their breath.

Then they started spending time on the ranch and realized how quickly it gets into your blood. What started with seven commercial heifers from Kali's father, brought down from Kansas in a little livestock trailer behind his motor home, grew into a registered livestock program, a pasture finished beef operation, and two feed store locations serving their local communities. "We didn't know how contagious it was going to be out here," Mike says.

They run cattle on the same schedule they had in refrigeration, but Mike will tell you the scenery is a lot better. Kali will tell you the genetics are a lot more interesting too, and their Hired Hand powered website is where all that work shows up at the click of a button.

Mark Gilliland grew up on a ranch at the Kansas-Oklahoma border that's been in his family for over a hundred years, worked on a tractor and fed cattle until he was 18, and fully expected to spend his life ranching. His high school counselor had other ideas. What followed was a genetics degree at the University of Kansas, medical school, five years of general surgery at the Texas Medical Center, and a career as a plastic surgeon and professor at Baylor College of Medicine that spanned 25 years.

He retired in 2013, moved back to the family ranch in 2014, and found that working with Herefords and Angus was unfulfilling after everything he'd seen. He went to a Longhorn cattle sale that year, met a ton of people, and within a year had 25 head of registered Longhorns and a plan to apply everything he knew about genetics to the breed.

He also knew he needed a website. He shopped around, but it had to be Hired Hand. The way the pedigrees connected across breeders, the measurements, the progeny data, the ability to sit at his computer and compare combinations across programs until he found the ones that worked, that was the research environment he needed. "Hired Hand websites had really a lot to do with my growth in the Longhorn industry," he says, and more than ten years in with over 100 females and a multiyear Horn Showcase Ultimate Bull, it shows.

Cody Robbins grew up on a ranch where his dad raised black Angus, so commercial cattle were the only world he knew. When he got into team roping he built his own commercial Longhorn herd to keep roping cattle on hand without having to buy new ones every year, which made practical sense at the time. When his hunting show, LIVE 2 HUNT with Cody and Kelsy, took off and the roping stopped, he tried to sell those cattle back into the roping market and found it unsustainable.

The frustration of that experience was still fresh when a registered breeder pulled him aside at a hunting trade show and invited him on a ranch tour. He went, saw registered Texas Longhorns for the first time, and sold his commercial herd immediately. It was about as far as you could get from the black Angus world he grew up in, and he never looked back.

His rodeo friends have never let him forget it. He'll posts videos of himself cuddling a heifer calves in the straw on his hunting pages and they text him calling him crazy.
