Scammers monitor every tweet containing requests for support on MetaMask, TrustWallet, and other popular crypto wallets, and respond to them with scam links in just seconds. To conduct these targeted phishing attacks, scammers abuse Twitter APIs that allow them to monitor all public tweets for specific keywords or phrases. If those phrases are present, these same programs will direct Twitter bots under the scammer's control to automatically reply to the tweets as fake support agents with links to scams that steal cryptocurrency wallets. To steal the recovery phrases (aka seed phrases), the threat actors set up support forms on Google Docs and other cloud platforms. These forms impersonate a basic support form, asking the user for their email address, the problem they are having, and their wallet's recovery phrase, as shown by the fake MetaMask support form (2nd and 3rd slide). Once the recovery phrase is sent to the attackers, it's game over and they now have full access to the cryptocurrency within your wallet and can transfer it to other wallets under their control. As a general rule, you should never share your wallet's recovery phrase with anyone. The recovery phrase is only for you, and no legitimate support person from MetaMask, TrustWallet, or elsewhere will ever ask for it.

Four Android banking trojans have been discovered penetrating the devices of nearly 300,000 devices between August and November. The malware is spreading via the official Google Play Store. According to ThreatFabric, the malicious apps posed as utility apps and attempted to take full control of the infected devices. These apps are being distributed only to specific regions or at later dates to evade detection. The names of the malicious apps are Protection Guard, Master Scanner Live, Gym and Fitness Trainer, CryptoTracker, PDF Document Scanner - Scan to PDF, and Two Factor Authenticator, among others. Once installed, these trojans can steal user passwords, keystrokes, SMS-based two-factor authentication codes, and screenshots.Additionally, they exhaust users' bank accounts without their knowledge by using the Automatic Transfer System tool. attackers are now using a technique called versioning to avoid detection. In this, clean versions of apps are uploaded first and then malicious functionalities are wrapped as new app updates. The apps have now been removed from the Play Store but infected users remain at risk.

Microsoft is making its Fluent-style emoji available in Windows 11 this week. A new optional update for the OS is rolling out that includes a number of important bug fixes and the new emoji Microsoft previewed earlier this year. Microsoft has replaced the standard paperclip emoji with its Clippy character. The emoji have also been redesigned to include bright and saturated colors, but lack the 3D aspects that made them pop. It’s not clear if we’ll ever see the impressive 3D emoji inside Windows 11 that Microsoft demonstrated earlier this year. We’re still expecting 3D and animated versions of these Fluent emoji to appear in products like Microsoft Teams, but if you want the new emoji in Windows then you’ll need to upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has made it clear that it doesn’t plan on bringing this new emoji to Windows 10.

A 2D Fluent design is rolling out this week.

A recent study by IBM revealed that organizations with fewer than 500 employees had an average data breach cost of $2.98 million per incident in 2021. As has been reported, approximately 60% of SMBs go out of business within six months of getting hacked. Remote workers in particular have been especially vulnerable to cyber threats since they reside outside of the corporate network environment. And with a large percentage of the workforce still working from home, this extends the threat surface and increases the likelihood of an attack. Managed services providers (MSPs) can play a vital role for SMBs when it comes to cybersecurity support. Since many SMBs don’t have the resources to hire several in-house IT / cybersecurity professionals, MSPs can shoulder a lot of that load, providing services to help reduce risk, enable growth opportunities, and support end users and customers alike.

52% of SMBs have experienced a cyberattack in the last year – and 10% have experienced more than 10 cyberattacks.

The increase of online shopping in general has attracted more fraudsters. With children spending a lot more time online, especially during lockdowns, grooming and dissemination of self-produced explicit material have increased significantly. In addition to expanding the efforts to tackle these threats from a law enforcement perspective, it is crucial to add another level of protection in terms of cybersecurity. The implementation of measures such as multi-factor authentication and vulnerability management are of utmost importance to decrease the possible exposure to cyber threats. Awareness raising and prevention are key components in reducing the effectiveness of cyberattacks and other cyber enabled criminal activities. The attacks on Kaseya and SolarWinds show how criminals have realised the potential in attacking digital supply chains, often going for the ‘weakest link’. However, many of the most infamous groups have reduced the attacks on governments and social services in an attempt to limit the attention of law enforcement on them. DDoS attacks have re-emerged and are targeting service providers, financial institutions and businesses.

The accelerated digitalization related to the COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced the development of a variety of cybercrime.

Microsoft has created a new Media Player app for Windows 11, and it’s beginning to test the app with Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel today. The redesigned Media Player app will support both audio and video, and it includes a design that better matches Windows 11’s UI improvements. At the heart of Media Player is a full-featured music library that allows you to quickly browse and play music, as well as create and manage playlists. The update to the new Media Player will replace the Groove Music app. Media Player will also support video, which is usually handled in Windows 10 and Windows 11 in a separate Films & TV app. All your content in the music and video folders on your PC will appear automatically in your library, but you can also tell Media Player where to look for additional content in app settings. It’s clear this Media Player app is also designed to replace the legacy Windows Media Player app that still exists in Windows 11 today. Microsoft says this legacy app will continue to be available in Windows Tools, but it looks like the new Media Player for Windows 11 will be the primary way to watch video and listen to audio in the operating system soon. The company hasn’t committed to a date for when all Windows 11 users will get this new app yet.

No more Groove Music or Windows Media Player.
