Had to talk about this one. 🎨
A fellow designer friend recently delivered a recreated vector logo to a client, including the Adobe Illustrator file (.ai). The client saw the extension, assumed AI was used, and accused them of cheating.
Let's clear this up, forever: .ai is not AI. It's the Adobe Illustrator file format. It has existed since 1987. Photoshop is .psd. Illustrator is .ai. That's it.
Even after explaining that, the client insisted they could've just used ChatGPT instead and saved a few hundred dollars, refusing to believe that ChatGPT cannot create a scalable vector logo. It genuinely cannot do that.
To someone with zero creative background, I understand how a familiar looking file extension feels like a gotcha right now. But it's exactly why client education matters so much in this industry. People don't know what they don't know.
Here's the part that really stuck with me though: my friend didn't just sit with that frustration alone. They shared it inside a trusted creative community, somewhere they could be honest without worrying a client might see it and recognize themselves.
That kind of relief is real. Being able to say "this happened and it was frustrating" to people who have lived the same thing themselves.
That's a huge reason I love being part of the Graphic Artists Guild. Long before I was ever on the board, I was just a member, showing up for exactly this: understanding, laughter over the absurd client moments, and the reminder that you are not doing this alone.
And honestly, this isn't just a design thing. I recommend this to every freelancer, every professional, every author, anyone who deals with clients: find your community. There is one for you, I promise. Just like the Guild is home for illustrators, designers, cartoonists, and all manner of visual creators, there's a version of this for whatever you do too. Go looking.
So: .ai is not AI. Tell a friend. 😄 And find your people; it changes everything.
