A common problem that every computer user faces is a computer that runs hot. It feels as if you are touching a keyboard that will burst into flames at any given second. This can be caused by a number of reasons and almost always leads to performance issues and can cause damage. What can you do about it to protect your investment? Ensure proper ventilation. Ideally your computer will be on a flat and hard surface. Avoid soft surfaces like cushions and ensure that the vents on the computer are unobstructed, allowing for adequate air flow. Dust frequently too, as dust buildup will act as an insulator and it can trap heat inside of your device. You can carefully use compressed air to assist in this task, and this simple step can help prevent multiple hardware issues and ensure optimal performance. And reduce demanding tasks. When you run resource intensive programs or games your device will generate more heat. If you close any unnecessary applications, you can limit the heat generated some.

As an MSP (Managed Services Provider) we are often asked a lot of the same IT (internet technology) questions. Chances are, you have wondered about them too. We are here to share clear answers to some of those questions.

Why is my computer so slow?
This performance question comes up very often. Sometimes the solution is simple, such as closing out multiple applications that are open, disabling startup items (files, folders, and applications that launch automatically when you log into your computer), and checking your task manager.

I'm unable to access my work network from home. Why?
This question is about connectivity. First you will want to verify your internet access, then double check your credentials. Afterwards you can also test your VPN and firewall.

Is this email safe?
Use the SLAM method to start with. S - check the sender's email address, looking for misspellings or odd domains, by hovering over the sender's name to reveal the actual email address. L - do not click any links. You can hover your mouse over the link to see the destination URL. If it looks suspicious, doesn't match the text, or you are not certain about it, do not click on it. A - beware of unexpected attachments as they can contain malware. Only open files if you are expecting them and you trust the sender. M - read through the message as poor grammar, urgent demands, spelling errors, and/or requests for personal or sensitive information such as passwords or account numbers are often tells of a cybercriminal wanting your information.

I recently received a call on the CCP Tech help line from a stranger who was "returning my call" to ask me to stop bothering them about IT services. Not only had I never called this person before, but I learned that some third party has been spoofing our name and number and trying to impersonate US! So, what can be done to protect yourself from getting scammed by spoof callers? First consider using a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone system, such as Microsoft Teams. It uses your internet connection to make and receive calls, while securing your calls and data.

CCP Tech can further help your business with our weekly cybersecurity micro trainings. These short 2-to-3-minute segments can make your team aware of the tactic's cybercriminals use and give helpful tips on safeguards. While this cannot prevent cybercriminals from spoofing your legitimate phone number, like they did ours, it can protect your business as you receive their calls. Your system will be able to distinguish fake calls from factual calls, separating fake from fact.

We recommend reporting incidents like these to government agencies such as the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), or the FBI's IC3 (Federal Bureau of Investigation Internet Crime Complaint Center).
