Hackers don’t always break down the door. Sometimes they stroll right in and stay for months.
Most businesses never notice until it’s too late.

Let’s fix that.

💡 Set a trap. A smart one.
A honeypot appears to be a juicy target: client data, credentials, and wire instructions. But it’s fake. And the second a hacker touches it, you get an alert.

🕵️ Why it works:
Hackers explore. They don’t just steal. They study how your money flows and when you’re vulnerable. A honeypot cuts their “dwell time” from months to minutes.

🏢 You don’t need to be a Fortune 500 company.
Even small businesses can set up honeypots on a budget. It's a way to transition from “unaware” to “prepared” without purchasing a multitude of new tools.

✅ Add this to your defense strategy:
Patch your systems
Use layered security (MFA, VPN, vaults)
Set up a honeypot to detect silent intrusions

🎙 I broke this down on the Smarter Online Safety podcast, along with mobile threats, shadow IT, and why your iPhone isn't as safe as you think.

If you’ve never heard of honeypots before, you’re not alone. But now you know. And now you’re dangerous and protected!

“Use It or Lose It” Reminder

Still hanging onto the budget you haven’t used yet this year?
If you're in IT or responsible for the budget, you know that Q4 goes by quickly.
And the cost of waiting? Even faster.

I’ve seen too many small businesses postpone upgrades or security projects, only to face significant challenges in Q1, including failures, delays, or higher costs.

The truth is: Q4 is your window.

- Get ahead of hardware failures.

- Take advantage of Section 179 tax savings.

- Fix security gaps before your insurance audit finds them.

Solve iT helps clients turn last-minute spending into strategic upgrades that actually reduce next year’s headaches. We’ll help you plan what’s urgent, what’s not, and what pays off the most.

Your iPhone isn’t bulletproof.
Your MFA isn’t foolproof.
And your “free” Wi-Fi might cost you everything.

Let’s talk about the habits that actually keep your data safe.

🛡 Use multiple layers of protection
MFA helps, but hackers can still intercept your login tokens if you’re not careful. That’s why I recommend passphrases, password vaults, and a VPN for sensitive activity.

📱 Treat your mobile device like a workstation
Many people assume iPhones are inherently safe. Update your phone regularly. Install antivirus protection. Sophos has a free option that works great.

☕ Be smarter than Starbucks
If you’re on public Wi-Fi without a VPN, your keystrokes, logins, and files are up for grabs. Hackers spoof networks that look legit. You won’t even know you joined the wrong one.

📶 Segment your network at home
Got a smart TV, a smart fridge, or a “smart” lightbulb? Keep IoT devices off your primary network. Ask your ISP to set up a guest or IoT network. It’s free and it works.

🎯 These tips came up during my interview on the Smarter Online Safety podcast. We covered mobile threats, shadow IT, honeypots, and what questions you should ask any IT provider before you sign a contract.

Stay paranoid, in a good way.

Your smart TV might be smarter than your IT policy.
That new conference room gadget? Could be a backdoor.
And hackers love it when no one tells the IT guy.

This is what we call shadow IT, and it’s a real problem.

📺 Here’s how it happens: An employee plugs in a smart device (such as a TV, speaker, or printer) without IT's knowledge. It connects to the internal network. It never gets patched. It quietly becomes an open door for attackers.

🌐 What to do instead:
Never connect unvetted devices to your core network
Set up a separate guest or IoT network (your ISP can do this for free)
Treat “smart” gadgets like external vendors: trust after verification

🚨 Bonus tip: Even at home, that new “connected” appliance belongs on a separate Wi-Fi network from your laptop or work device. If one gets compromised, the other stays safe.

This isn’t theory. It’s what I’ve seen in the field.

🎙 I shared all this and more on the Smarter Online Safety podcast. We covered mobile threats, honeypots, MFA gaps, and how small businesses can actually stay ahead.

Smart devices don’t have to become stupid mistakes. But you’ve got to set the rules.
