We are closely monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 and wanted to let all of our clients know that NWG currently has an internal policy in place and we are taking all appropriate safety measures and following the guidelines provided by the CDC. While our industry already consistently works remotely, we will continue to do so with more frequency.

OCR Settles with Provider for $100K for failing to implement HIPAA security requirements

The sole practitioner of a medical practice providing gastroenterological services to more than 3,000 patients each year is paying a large fine this year. The investigation revealed the provider never conducted a Security Risk Analysis of potential risks and vulnerabilities. The Provider failed to implement policies and procedures that would prevent, detect, contain, and correct security violations.

OCR announced its first settlement over potential HIPAA violations this year; a Utah provider will pay HHS $100,000 and agreed to a corrective action plan for failing to conduct a risk analysis.

At least 7.2 billion malware attacks and 151.9 million ransomware attacks have been reported through the first nine months of 2019, according to research from the SonicWall Capture Labs threat research team.

SonicWall recorded year-over-year increases in the following types of cyber-attacks:
• Encrypted Malware: Up 58 percent.
• Web Application Attacks: Up 37 percent.
• Internet of Things (IoT) Malware: Up 33 percent.

Organizations can take a unified and layered security approach to protect their networks against cyber-attacks, SonicWall CEO Bill Conner said. In doing so, organizations can maintain real-time protection, quickly identify cyber threats and keep pace with evolving cyber-attacks. Furthermore, cyber-attack tactics and techniques are changing, Conner noted. If organizations develop and implement security rules, they can reduce the risk of cyber-attacks and data breaches.
