Have you seen the new Indian River Chamber of Commerce website? We quietly launched it in June, and are just now finding some time to tell you all about it. This was so much fun to work on! Our owner, Tara, grew up in Indian River, and Northwoods Digital is a Chamber member, so it was an extra special project for us. we wanted to create a website that serves existing Chamber members, provides valuable visitor resources, and showcases everything that makes the Indian River area so amazing.

The new site includes:
🔍 A member directory and online membership signup
🛥️ Visitor resources: a list of boat launches, hiking & biking trails, and area attractions
📅 A blog and events calendar
🌀 …and so much more

We're so proud of how it came together and grateful to the Indian River Resort Region Chamber of Commerce for trusting us with this project, and a special thank you goes out to Chamber staff Vicki Uhl-Morgan for partnering with us to make this project happen. Take a look and let us know what you think!

Spend a day with me as I run my one-woman web design & technology company. Not pictured: the entire lifetime I lived before we even left the house at 8:30am, complete with breakfast, books, and a bath. Working moms understand.

I wish I could tell you that running a technology company is terribly exciting, but realistically, most days look like some version of this: sitting in front of a computer followed by…more sitting in front a computer. I love what I do though! I find a lot of creative joy in building software, plus the satisfaction of helping people run their businesses more smoothly doesn’t get old.

Today’s technology lesson is about knowing your sources and never blindly trusting the internet. If you’re in Northern Michigan or the UP right now, the sky is hazy with falling ash, it smells like campfire, and it is decidedly unsafe to be outside without a mask or respirator. But if you look down at your phone or smartwatch, it will likely tell you that the Air Quality Index is just fine.

That’s because most smartphones, and many other AQI reporting apps, rely on government data which defaults to a 24hr trailing average of the AQI. Not particularly helpful if you want to know the CURRENT air quality index.

My preferred method for monitoring air quality is PurpleAir. Their map is populated by private citizens who voluntarily report data from their own air quality sensors, and the map reports updated data every 10 minutes. Coverage on the PurpleAir map isn’t expansive in Northern Michigan, but it paints a more accurate picture than what you’ll get on most other weather apps. Stay safe everyone, don’t blindly trust the internet (especially with your health) and remember the importance of understanding where your information is coming from.

You can access the PurpleAir map at https://map.purpleair.com/

It’s Monday, which means I am parked in my get sh*t done chair. I am lucky to have a home office that is comfy, cozy, and right in front of a window. Sunshine is life-giving. Last week my daughter Willow had an orthotics appointment in TC, which ate into working time, so this week I am playing some catch up. I am working on wrapping up 3 (!) new websites, and then kicking off a big project that I am SO excited about. I won’t be able to share much about that one for several months, but I can’t wait until you all can see it. Summer is a crazy time for my business, so every work day is a sprint to the finish. Such is the rhythm of life Northern Michigan. We go, go, go during the tourist seasons and wind down in the colder months. I hope you all have a productive week and remember to have fun too. I’ll definitely be enjoying a few evening beach sessions.

Happy Friday everyone. I get so caught up in doing the work of running a business, that I forget to come on here and post about what I’ve been up to. Today I thought I’d share a little bit about a project I did this week that falls into the “boring but important” category…email migrations. It’s not flashy or exciting, but doing it right and without any interruptions to my clients’ email operations is something I take a lot of pride in. Excuse the imperfect video. I am not used to turning the camera around myself!

Busy, busy, busy is the theme for this summer so far, and I am grateful for it. I've launched a couple of websites recently and there's lots of new projects in the pipeline. I look forward to sharing more about these projects eventually. As always, I appreciate my clients and the trust they place in this small-town Northern Michigan business.

If you'd like to work with me on a website or a redesign, please get ahold of me sooner than later to start planning. My calendar is booked and and only getting busier!
