Hello everyone,
Dispatch has officially moved all radio traffic over to the MPSCS 800 mhz system. As I'm sure most of you have noticed, your scanners have gone silent. I wanted to clear up a few things now that the switch has been made.
• This new system is digital. The scanner you've been using for the last 10, 20, 30 years is not capable of decoding digital transmissions.
• This new system utilizes something called trunking. Most of your common, inexpensive scanners do not follow trunking systems. What is trunking? Trunking is a "pool" of about 10 frequencies on an individual tower site. When a first responder keys their radio, the tower site will pull a frequency from this "pool" and assign it to the users radio. Once they unkey, this frequency goes back into the "pool". This is why a advanced scanner is necessary to follow this system.
• The frequencies of this new system are in the 800 mhz band. The old system ran in the 155 mhz band. Even if your scanner can recieve in this new band it most likely hasn't been programed to this new system yet.
So. What can I do your asking? Its most likely you will need to purchase a new scanner to continue listening. Message us the make and model of your scanner and we can let you know if its compatible for this new system. Here's a few pointers for looking into a new scanner.
• The easy route - We sell and program scanners. Message us here on our page for pricing. We provide "ready out of the box" scanners.
• The more challenging, but doable route.
Purchase a new scanner and program the new frequencies and talkgroups. Here's what you'll need your new scanner to be capable of.
800 mhz
P25 digital
Trunking/trunktracking
These scanners are, at a minimum, $300 plus. Don't be fooled by a $150 scanner that says 800mhz. It won't decode digital.
Even if you don't purchase a scanner through us, we can answer questions. Send us a message anytime.
