Why, as IT Professionals, do we do what we do? Experience.
It all boils down to one thing, experience. Experience has taught us the right ways to do things. Why do we call them the 'right' way? Because those processes, procedures, setups prevent pitfalls, lost productivity and lost data that we've seen over and over.
Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!
The many decades of experience has taught our staff many lessons. One of the basics is the need to have proper passwords AND to never reuse the same password.
We often have the need to find out why a computer blue screened or an app crashed. Typically that answer can be found in the application logs. Just today I had two instances where as soon as I reviewed the log files I was given much more info than I could ever guess. In one instance the user could not upload a file. I was looking all over and couldn't find where I thought the folder should be. I fired up the Microsoft Audit log and there is the answer.
The second situation had to do with permissions. Why can't users access what they need to access? Well in most applications, websites and operating systems you have log files that record when important things happen. Like when users get added or removed from groups and who made that change. Then you can go back to the actor and find out the reason. Either way, the logs don't lie.
One thing that I've learned over the years is I hate it when a tech blames another company. Pointing fingers at your sibling trying to blame them for eating all the cookies out of the cookie jar usually doesn't end very well. You both get punished.
I always explain to my clients my approach. I do as much research and gather all the understanding I can before sending the client off into the 99% overseas abyss of 'tech support'. If at all possible we try to bear the pain of dealing with the overseas guys. Submit ticket, wait, get acknowledgement email, wait, wait, wait. Maybe get to talk to someone for a bit. Wait. Wait. That’s usually how it goes.
You pay us for our experience, now follow the plan!
We get that your small business has a limited budget. So does ours. We do our best to keep our charges to a minimum every day. Some times our way does cost a little more, but it will always cost you less in the long run.
I promise you if you stay on our course with all of our recommended parts and pieces you'll have increased productivity, less problems and less data loss. You're employees will be able to concentrate on their actual jobs instead of that nagging app that keeps crashing. With less tech headaches your employees will be happier and work harder for you. Let us properly manage your devices, servers, logins and third party apps. Then on that rare occurence an employee does get disgruntled and leaves on bad terms you'll have peace of mind your data is protected.
Experience recognizes patterns
With time we have gained experience, and with that experience we are able to recognize patterns. When you've supported hundreds and hundreds of computers, servers, apps, users you see the same issues over and over. People don't call us when things are going fine. They call us when something is broken. We can easily spot problems long before they cost big money or big productivity losses.
Did I mention we like to standardize?
We have a set of standards for how we setup your email, servers, computers, smartphones, tablets, everything. That standard will definitely save you time because its been proven day after day. One thing I'd love to do more is helping clients with their internal systems. Stop typing that client's information into 4 systems. Just do it once and automate the next 3. Want better reporting? Lets examine the data together and put together a game plan. Do you know how much money you actually made on that last job? We can standardize those reports and create dashboards for your next company meeting.
Technology is a very large part of your business. Without your computer, smartphone, tablet, wifi, network, internet connection you can't do your job. Or how about that big beautiful monitor we recommended that doesn't cause eye strain so you can continue to work whenever you need to. Don't cheap out on your support. Don't cheap out on your laptop. We say and do things because experience has taught us the RIGHT WAY. Not the cheap way. Not to put Band-Aid on top of a Band-Aid. Follow our lead and everyone in your business we be much more productive. Increased productivity means everyone makes more money in less time.

PS: Preventing problems is ALWAYS cheaper than fixing them after the fact. Ask your doctor, or your attorney!
PPS: Our RIGHT WAY also keeps the bad guys away! Nothing worse than getting a nastygram that you're network has been breached or your new employee fell for the Nigerian Prince scam and wants to give them $5M.
