There was no better sound in elementary school than the squeaky wheels of the TV cart rolling into class.

A giant TV strapped to a metal cart. A VCR underneath. A teacher fighting with the remote while the whole class yelled advice.

It meant no worksheets for at least one period.

What did your class watch when the cart showed up? Bill Nye? A movie the day before break? That one safety video everybody somehow remembers?

That strip of outlets behind your desk might not be protecting anything.

A power strip and a surge protector can look exactly alike. One just gives you more outlets. The other is built to absorb voltage spikes before they reach your computer, TV, or console.

How to tell which one you have:

Look for a joule rating on the label or box. No rating usually means no surge protection.
Look for a "protected" indicator light.
Check for a UL 1449 listing, the safety standard for surge protective devices.

One more thing most people don't know: surge protectors wear out. Each spike they absorb uses up some of their capacity. If the "protected" light is off, it's time for a new one, even if the outlets still work.

Save this for the next time you're crawling behind the desk.

Hey everyone!

We're doing another giveaway over at Computer Prodigies . We have a few extra devices at the shop that we want to pass on to folks in the community who could truly use them.

To be upfront, this is nothing crazy—we have 3 Chromebooks and 1 All-in-One desktop (loaded with Linux Mint and built-in Wi-Fi). They aren't high-end machines, but they are perfect for schoolwork, putting together a resume, finding a job, or just streaming movies at home.

This is a completely free raffle. There is absolutely no BS and no catch. We just like to give back to the community when we can. We'll be picking 4 different people to each get a device.

My only request: Please do not comment to win if you just plan on reselling them. We really want these to go to individuals or families who genuinely need a device right now.
