I welcome you to check out our new Business Directory on DistantHorizon.com This is a long-term project. As of today the site has 199,364 pages and over 1 million business listings and will have 7 Million by spring. As we have done for years, Distant Horizon always uses ourselves as the "guinea pig" for new ideas, because in internet marketing there is always something emerging and always things that need to be vetted before a consultant can recommend it. This site is teaching us about "upsizing" for large monitor users, affiliate programs, Google Adsense and advanced SEO techniques. The Distant Horizon Directory is unique in that it has a page for every town in the United States. This human-curated directory aims to link to every retail, service, commercial and industrial web site in America, with a focus on family-owned businesses and Made in the USA products.

We are experiencing a hardware problem at our Naperville data center affecting the web sites and e-mail for some customers. We are working diligently to repair the equipment but we may experience some extended downtime into the weekend. You can text us at 773-932-7483 but we assure you that we will be back up as soon as possible. E-mail is being queued on our backup equipment so when the main system comes back up you should be able to see e-mail that came in during the outage. Our sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

When looking at Tesla, everyone should remember Amazon and Apple over the years. There were moments where it was looking bleak - but you have to remind yourself that Musk is the most innovative mind in American business and has been for years. He is actually way ahead of even what Steve Jobs was thinking. There were already smart phones when Jobs put out the iPhone. The Tesla was far more innovative in my opinion and has the possibility of disrupting for decades once they hit their next groove.

Tesla shares continue to be under pressure as Wall Street worries about the electric automaker's fate and the mindset of CEO Elon Musk.

I'm still surprised Wal-Mart or Amazon didn't snap up Toys R Us brand already. This is one of those situations where executing before the next Christmas season would have maximized the value of the investment. More often, by the time someone else gets control of the brand, the value is diminished and people have moved on.

Walmart announced plans to add a 30% new selection of toys at some stores and expand its website assortment by 40%.

Had a nice visit with Danny Rigoni at the new office this weekend putting together conference tables and shooting the breeze about his gradual ascendance to real estate mogul. Danny worked for Art and I at DH and Honeyman Farms. It's hard to believe he is now done with his Master's Degree!

It is so interesting to look back on how much the internet has changed over the 18 years we've been in business. This web site, which we built in our first year (1999) remains unchanged, still live and almost lost in time. I sold this project and my contractor Jeff Peoples coded it, our first ever ASP database-driven catalog. In a transient industry where you're only as good as your last gig, it is a treat to see blasts from the past like this. It's hard to beat the ROI of a web site that lasts 18 years!
