‎ميكيلي “كويتو” أماتوري (1826–1883)

‎وُلد باسم كويتو في كومي، إحدى قرى جبال النوبة في السودان. أُسِر وهو في السادسة من عمره بعد ان حرقت قريته ، وبيع في سوق الرقيق بالخرطوم. أنقذه الطبيب الإيطالي لويجي كاستنيوني من السوق، فعبر القارات وتعمّد باسم ميكيلي أماتوري.

‎في الثامنة عشرة، التحق بفرقة البرسالييري، رماة النخبة في إيطاليا. قاتل في حروب التوحيد، ونال رتبة قائد، وخلال تفشي الكوليرا في صقلية، قاد بشجاعة — لينال تكريماً شخصياً من الملك فيكتور إيمانويل الثاني.

Michele “Quetto” Amatore  (1826–1883) 
Born Quetto in Commi, a Nuba Mountains village in Sudan, he was captured at age six after his village was burned, sold into slavery in Khartoum. Rescued from the slave market by Italian physicist Luigi Castagnone, he crossed continents and was baptized as Michele Amatore.

At eighteen, he enlisted in the Bersaglieri, Italy’s elite sharpshooters. He fought in the wars of unification, earned the rank of Captain, and, during a cholera outbreak in Sicily, led with valor، receiving personal honors from King Victor Emmanuel II.

As we mark the 138th anniversary of the liberation of Khartoum, I am proud to unveil a new portrait of Imam Muhammad Ahmed Al-Mahdi. The creation of this piece involved the use of AI and Photoshop, as well as input from Al-Mahdis great grandsons, with a particular emphasis on incorporating their facial features. The aim was to create a more accurate and authentic representation, as opposed to previous works by orientalist who may have incorporated European features to align with colonizer's attempts to obscure Al Mahdi’s identity and hide any photographic evidence of him.
