Security Tip Wednesday

Cyber threats don’t take a day off, and neither should your security strategy.

Protecting endpoints is critical, but identity-based attacks are rapidly increasing. Stolen credentials, MFA bypass attempts, and unauthorized account access are becoming some of the most common attack methods targeting businesses today.

Adding Identity Threat Detection & Response (ITDR) to your existing security strategy provides an additional layer of protection through continuous identity monitoring, suspicious login detection, and faster response to compromised accounts.

A layered approach combining endpoint protection and identity security helps businesses stay ahead of modern cyber threats and reduce overall risk.

⚠️ FRAUD ALERT ⚠️
Phone Scam Targeting Business Banking

We want to make you aware of an active phone scam currently affecting businesses and organizations nationwide. Cybercriminals are spoofing legitimate bank phone numbers to appear as though calls are coming directly from trusted financial institutions.

Example: A scammer going by the name of Adam Lewis is posing as an employee from Golden Valley Bank in an active phone scam targeting local businesses.

Scammers are spoofing real bank phone numbers and attempting to:
• Change ACH/wire instructions
• Request banking details or MFA codes
• Pressure employees into urgent financial actions
• Gather sensitive company information

🚫 Never trust the caller ID alone.
🚫 Never share passwords, MFA codes, or account info over the phone.
✅ Hang up and call your bank directly using a verified number.
✅ Verify all payment changes through a secondary contact method.

Please alert your accounting, payroll, HR, and finance teams immediately.

If you receive a suspicious call:
• End the call immediately
• Do not provide information
• Contact your bank directly
• Report incidents to [email protected]

Stay vigilant. Cybercriminals rely on urgency and deception.

Thursday Tech Tips: Telecom Spotlight

Is Your Phone System Still Compliant?

In today’s fast-evolving technology landscape, phone system compliance is more important than many businesses realize. Modern phone systems are no longer just for making calls; they’re connected to networks, store sensitive information, and support emergency services.

Here’s why compliance matters more than ever:

✔️ Emergency calls (911/E911) must route correctly with accurate location information
✔️ Outdated systems can create cybersecurity vulnerabilities
✔️ Federal regulations now require enhanced emergency calling protocols
✔️ VoIP and cloud systems must meet stricter security and data protection standards

The risks of doing nothing can include:
• Failed emergency response situations
• Costly downtime
• Compliance violations, fines, and liability exposure
• Security breaches from outdated technology

What should businesses do?
✅ Review your current phone system setup
✅ Verify emergency call routing and location accuracy
✅ Ensure regular updates and monitoring are in place
✅ Consult with a telecommunications specialist

Did you know? TCPA violations can result in fines ranging from $500–$1,500 per unauthorized call or text message.

Not sure if your phone system meets today’s standards? Let us help you assess your system to ensure it’s secure, compliant, and ready for what’s next.

Is it time to upgrade your computer… or can you squeeze more life out of it?

A lot of businesses wait until something breaks, but by then, it’s already costing you time and money.

Here are 4 clear signs it’s time to upgrade:

-Your computer is slowing down daily
If it takes forever to boot, open apps, or switch between tasks, it’s impacting productivity more than you think.

-You can’t run newer software or updates
With Windows 10 approaching end-of-life, unsupported systems become a security risk.

-You’re constantly running out of storage or memory
Frequent freezing or crashes = your system is struggling to keep up.

-Repairs are becoming frequent
If you’re fixing the same machine over and over, it’s usually more cost-effective to replace it.

Pro Tip:
Sometimes a simple memory upgrade can extend the life of a system, but not always. Knowing the difference can save thousands.

If you're unsure, we can help evaluate your systems and build a plan before issues start.

Cybersecurity Wednesday:
🚨 How Ransomware Actually Enters Small Businesses

Here’s the real entry point:

📩 An employee receives a normal-looking email.
It appears to be from a vendor. A client. Even Microsoft 365.

It says:

“Invoice attached”

“Document shared with you”

“Password expiring”

They click.

No dramatic breach. No warning alarms. Just one click.

Behind the scenes:
• Malware downloads silently
• Credentials get harvested
• The attacker gains remote access
• Backups are targeted
• Encryption begins

In many cases, businesses had:
✔ Antivirus
✔ Firewalls
✔ Spam filters

What they didn’t have:
❌ Advanced email filtering
❌ Multi-factor authentication
❌ Endpoint detection & response
❌ Tested backup recovery (not just backups verified recovery, like solutions such as Datto)
❌ Ongoing security awareness training

Ransomware isn’t about “if you’re important enough.”
It’s about whether you’re protected enough.

Small and mid-sized businesses are targeted because attackers know:
You likely have data worth paying for but not an internal security team.

The real protection isn’t one tool.

It’s layered security + proactive monitoring + educated users.

If your security plan is “we have antivirus,” it’s time for a deeper conversation.

Wednesday Tech Tips:

“If it’s still working, we don’t need to replace it.”

Most business tech fails slowly, not suddenly.
By the time it crashes, productivity has already been leaking for months.

Old tech costs more than new tech. You just don’t see the bill yet.
But during those “it still works” months, you’re paying for:
⏳ Lost employee time
😤 Frustration and mistakes
🔁 Repeated repair costs
🧩 Compatibility issues with newer tools
📉 Slower customer response times

That’s the hidden bill.

Smart businesses replace tech based on lifecycle and performance, not just whether it powers on.

Because “still turning on” and “supporting your business well” are two very different things.

Tech Tip Thursday:

If your company doesn’t have clear guidelines for AI use, now is the time.
A simple AI policy helps protect data, set expectations, and prevent accidental security risks.

Implementing an AI policy:

-Clarifies which AI tools are approved for work

-Protects sensitive company and client data

-Sets clear expectations for responsible AI use

-Reduces the risk of accidental security or compliance issues

-Encourages innovation without sacrificing security

Tech Tip Tuesday: Cybersecurity Dangers to Watch for During the Holiday Season

The holidays aren’t just busy for shoppers; they’re busy for cybercriminals too. As online activity spikes, so do scams.

Fake Shopping Sites & Too-Good-to-Be-True Deals:

Scammers spin up convincing “stores” with massive discounts on popular brands, then steal your card info or never ship anything.

Gift Card & Charity Scams:

Attackers love emotional hooks: gift cards, donations, and “help a family in need” pitches.
Never pay invoices or “urgent fees” with gift cards.
Donate only through known, reputable charities’ official sites.
Verify any request that comes via email, text, or social media.

Public Wi-Fi Shopping:

Holiday travel means more people shopping and banking at the airport, hotel, and café Wi-Fi. These networks can be monitored or spoofed.
Avoid entering passwords or payment info on public Wi-Fi.
Use a VPN when you must connect.
Turn off auto-connect to open networks.
Type retailer URLs directly instead of clicking ads.
Look for HTTPS and check reviews before buying.
If the price looks unreal, assume it is.

Quick holiday checklist:
Think before you click.
Verify senders and websites.
Use strong, unique passwords and MFA.
Be extra cautious with money-related messages.

Staying a little suspicious this season can save you a lot of headaches in the new year.

Security Wednesday URGENT: Microsoft Teams Security Warning

A newly discovered issue allows attackers to bypass security when you join Teams chats as a guest. This increases the risk of phishing and malware from external users. If you receive an unexpected invite or notice anything suspicious, do not click and contact our team immediately.
