⚠️ Tax Season Scam Alert — What You Need to Know
Tax season brings out the scammers every year, but 2026 is shaping up to be especially aggressive. Changes to tax filing programs have left a lot of people unsure about what's legitimate, and scammers are taking full advantage of the confusion.
Here's what we're seeing right now:
📱 Fake "refund approved" texts and emails — Messages that look like they're from the IRS or a state tax office asking you to click a link to "verify your identity." These are phishing scams designed to steal your personal information.
📞 IRS impersonation calls — Threatening calls claiming you owe back taxes and demanding immediate payment by gift card or wire transfer. The real IRS never does this.
💻 Phishing emails from "tax software" — Fake emails that appear to come from TurboTax, H&R Block, or other tax services asking you to update your account.
🔑 How to protect yourself:
• The IRS will never contact you by text, email, or social media • Never click links in unexpected tax-related messages • Go directly to irs.gov if you need to check your account • File early — it reduces the window for someone to file a fraudulent return in your name • Consider getting an IRS Identity Protection PIN at irs.gov/ippin
