We’re introducing a new component to our RESERVE 6SN7 tubes: a rubber damper that sits at the base of the tube and helps to reduce microphonics in certain uncommon circumstances.

The ways people listen to music are evolving. Microphonics aren’t a big issue for hi-fi amps in dedicated listening rooms, but it can be difficult to isolate vibrations in more casual setups, like using a headphone amp at your desk. In rare cases, we’ve heard from our customers that they experience minor microphonics with this kind of arrangement. This damper is our solution, because we believe strongly that our tubes - and especially our flagship RESERVE line - should serve the needs of all our customers, even the minority.

We’re always committed to going above and beyond the usual, and the damper is just one way that we’re looking to get ahead of concerns our customers have identified. If you’re not experiencing these issues, rest assured that the component is 100% optional and won’t affect the price of our tubes. We’ve updated our website to add a hand-drawn Ray Tubes Technical Drawing for each of our vacuum tubes. These drawings, which show the dimensions and pinout of the tubes, are an invaluable reference for determining amp compatibility, but they’re also a project a long time in the making. Inspired Mark Roberts’ beautiful pencil-and-watercolor illustrations for the McLaren F1 owner’s manual, we’d always wanted to bring a touch of the 1970s to our technical drawings, but finding the right artist was a challenge.

Then our CEO Nelson Wu came across the work of artist and designer Izzy Cammareri, whose illustrations adorn the in-house publications of The Peninsula Hotels. Her art has an illustrative quality that’s rare to see in modern graphic design, and that’s why she was the perfect fit for the job. Over the next several months she worked closely with our team to develop the style of our technical drawings, painstakingly sketching each tube and labelling everything by hand. The result is a throwback to a bygone era, and we couldn’t be happier.

At Ray Tubes, we’re big believers in putting in the extra effort to create something that’s not just functional but beautiful and thoughtful. If our new technical drawings elicit an emotional response from the viewer, then all that work will have been worth it. If you’re interested in learning more about this philosophy, check out our blog for a full account of how these technical drawings were made!
