: The client brought me a 4 - legged base made of pine wood stained brown. He asked if I could make a top for it and it would probably sit in the family’s basement when complete. I said sure as I wondered what I could do for a top that would look appropriate on that base. I decided to use 4 x 4’s to match the legs. They were cut so the top of the base was inset. Once the top was built I decided it looked too plain so I brought out and colored the grain with a propane torch. The sides were ebonized black to highlight the surface. Next I painted the base flat black and replaced the deck screws holding down the shelf boards with decorative black hammered head screws. An oil finish was applied to the top and everything was given a coat of hard wax. Lastly, decorative stars were were hammered into the sides. Here are some pictures of the finished piece. Btw … they decided to move the old furniture to the basement 😎
