This I wrote on my linked in page, thought I would share with Facebook as well...
Many of us fail to really look at the quality of workmanship performed in their data closets (IDF's) and MDF. Owners have so much more to worry about during the stressful time right before opening day. Many low voltage contractors are also rushing during these final days. We (low voltage contractors) have to make sure all the back office locations are ready for computers and telephones as there is typically one person already answering the phones regarding reservations and new staff organization prior to opening. Also, most importantly is the need for the trainers to be able to set up their PMS equipment in the meeting rooms to get the staff prepared for opening.
All these immediate needs spiral down on the low voltage contractor very quickly as the days seem to fly by prior to opening day. Many times the result of these pre-opening needs ends up being very sloppy data closet terminations. The technicians are rushed to make various locations live before they are ready to terminated the complete data closet. Here is an example of this type of work: Left Picture below
Does it work, probably. But how long before these cable get touched or pushed to the side to add more locations and in doing so become disconnected to the patch panel, making that location now dead. Worse off the technician does not know they have disconnected another location and are back to the office their before you realize one of your crucial terminals is now not working! Down Time!
When your data closet is terminated in a professional and workmanlike manner, the result will be similar to this:
