If you run a camp store, resort pro shop, or outdoor retail gear site and use Google Shopping campaigns, Google recently made a quiet backend change that could be quietly eating your ad budget.
Google has officially rolled out an update that automatically enables Local Inventory Ads by default across all Standard Shopping campaigns. Previously, running these ads required an explicit opt-in. Now, it is the standard behavior. The global opt-out switch has been completely removed from both the Google Ads user interface and the API.
If your physical camp store or pro shop inventory is linked to your Google Merchant Center, Google is now automatically serving local inventory ads using the budget you set aside for your standard, online-focused Shopping campaigns.
Without your intervention, local store clicks could cannibalize the budget you meant for national e-commerce sales. Even worse, if your local store inventory feed is not updated in real-time, Google might show ads for items that are currently out of stock or display outdated pricing, leading to frustrated guests and wasted ad spend.
Since you can no longer simply turn off local ads with a single toggle, you must actively segment your campaigns using alternative methods to protect your ad spend.
In the Google Ads user interface, navigate to your campaign settings and find the Inventory Filter. Set this filter to Channel equals Online to exclude local physical inventory from serving on that specific campaign.
If you use custom scripts or API tools to manage your campaigns, make sure your developers remove the old enable local setting. Keeping this deprecated code in place will now trigger runtime errors and could break your active campaigns.
