In 2015, developers illegally demolished the historic Carlton Tavern in London, thinking they'd just get fined. Instead, they were ordered to rebuild it brick by brick, exactly as it was. The rebuild was completed in 2021, and the older bricks are still visible on the right.

The Carlton Tavern, located in Maida Vale, London, was the only building on its street to survive the Blitz during World War II—making its 2015 demolition all the more shocking. Without warning or proper permits, developers bulldozed the pub in hopes of replacing it with luxury flats, assuming a fine would be the only consequence.

Instead, Westminster City Council took the unprecedented step of ordering the developers to reconstruct the building exactly as it had been, using original materials wherever possible.

Over the next six years, builders meticulously recreated the pub, referring to photographs and salvaged bricks. The pub's distinctive red brickwork, original tiling, and signage, such as ā€œCHARRINGTON’S SPARKLING ALES AND FAMOUS STOUTā€ā€”were faithfully restored. On the right side of the building, the darker, weathered bricks stand as a visible reminder of the original 1920s structure.

The rebuilt Carlton Tavern reopened in April 2021 and has since become a symbol of architectural justice and heritage preservation. It’s a rare case where developers were held fully accountable, and history won.

I recently was given a Cardas Audio phono cartridge by a customer. Turned out it was a Benz Ruby with a myrtlewood body. It played, but really needed help. I sent it to Soundsmith for a rebuild and boy they did a great job. It has blown away the Hana I have in all aspects. Tighter bass, clearer highs and mids, more air. I had read reviews that the Ruby was a great cartridge, but that was an understatement. I have had a lot of cartridges, but the level of refinement is incredible. Soundsmith did a killer job on it. My vinyl setup is a Gyrodec with the optional Orbe platter, Orgin Live Encounter tonarm, and Black Ice F159 phonostage.

Present system as pictured in the previous post. Amp is Marantz 8B, preamp is Cary Audio SLP 05, Unison CD Duo, and F159 Phonostage. Turntable is a Michell Gyrodec w a Hana MC, John Tucker modified Oppo 93. Speakers are Brodmann VC2. Very natural sounding and musical. Also very fast and detailed with a huge precise soundstage. Love it.

Thought I would post a picture of my system. All tube including a 1966 Marantz 8B.

I recently got a bag of tubes and 2 amps from a friend of mine. I wound up selling one of the amps, a Marantz 8B, and keeping one. My tech modified the heck out of it-new resistors, caps, and Audio Note Silver output caps. The tubes he gave me were EVI, which bought the tooling for the Mullard XF4 EL 34 tubes. I now have enough EL34's for the rest of my life. They are incredible tubes. In the Marantz they have sweet detailed highs, smooth midrange, and an extended iron grip on the bass.
I combined this amp with a Cary Audio SLP05 preamp-I am in audio heaven. Musical, smooth, detailed and very fast, yet a delicacy I have never heard. I search for the combination of the above, but also weight of the instruments-especially stand up bass and guitar. Also the sound of the skins in drums. This combo does all of this in spades. Very, Very, happy.
