Company "A" is stealing your info!

Watch out for app "B" it will infect your phone!

What I find most troubling with all this is mostly in two buckets:

1. The people leveling these accusations haven't the foggiest clue how any of this works and may as well be saying "The thingamajig is gonna boogie man you with gremlins! Quick throw salt over your shoulder!"

2. Stop talking about companies or apps, explain to me the specifics of what is troubling and how we intend to guardrail against said activity. Why 'ban TikTok', shouldn't we ban specific activity and therefore no matter who owns said technology in what country we don't allow it?

What happened to expecting the consumer to have some ownership and understanding of what they are doing so they can accept or decline the risk?

Always Go Back to the "Why"

I get called in to solve a problem, but a 'solution' has already been chosen!?

It’s easy to get caught up in the specifics, in a hurry to get it resolved and lose sight of the core problem. Remember to revisit why you need it in the first place.

You're hiring an expert in a specific field, take the time to walk them through the problem from the beginning. Sharing the full context ensures they understand the bigger picture and can craft the best possible solution.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses. Part of focusing on a field is knowing about solutions not every knows to even ask about.

When does an application go from Asset to Liability?

This isn't always straightforward, with clear KPI's for you. Sales from (insert name of cloud/SAAS provider here) will tell you when you get a demo, all about the fantastic things they will do, then demo in a vacuum that is not your business.

Descriptions of a utopia, perfect work flows, happy customers. F.U.D. filled version of what happens in the hellscape that is you not buying the solution.

Solution? Create a disaster recovery plan for what to do when and if said application fails. This plan, if done thoughtfully will articulate risk & requirements for replacement, while creating a plan to operate.
