StrikeAlert Lightning Detectors

StrikeAlert Lightning Detectors This lightning detector indicates how far away lightning is and can follow the progress of the storm. Lightning struck nearby.

Can be clipped to a belt or backpack, so it is good for sports usage as well as everyday. Outdoors Technologies was founded in 1999 for the purpose of providing an accurate, affordable, and uncomplicated device to warn outdoor enthusiasts of the presence of lightning. In 1998, one of the founders of Outdoors was riding his bike near his home in Colorado when he felt his hairs prickling and had a m

etallic taste in his mouth. He hopped off his bike and went to a low place on the ground. He made it home and, being an engineer, started thinking about how to protect himself in the future. For someone outdoors so much, the presence of lightning is a common reality. A group of us got together and brainstormed ideas. In addition to spending a lot of time outdoors ourselves, we’re also parents. Watching our kids on the soccer or baseball fields when there is a storm approaching is sobering. Coaches and referees didn't know how or when to make the call to end the game or practice. The same was true for lifeguards, golf course supervisors, and the list goes on. We put our combined 60 plus years of Hewlett Packard test and measurement design experience to work and designed the original StrikeAlert product. We chased storms all over the United States to test our prototypes. When we were convinced the design was ready, we attended trade shows and sent press releases to get the word out. We were grateful to receive a positive response. It turns out that almost everyone has a lightning story and is interested in StrikeAlert. Editors of newspapers and magazines along with television stations tested StrikeAlert and gave us good reviews. We’re on our third version of StrikeAlert and have more new products in the works. We continue to be passionate about ways to improve our products but are most excited when one of our customers calls us to share their experience when they put them to use. Be sure to read some of these at customer reviews, and thank you for your interest in StrikeAlert and Outdoors Technologies.

It is amazing how fast this year has gone and in the upcoming days folks will be traveling to gather with family, some will be staying "tucked in" at their own haven, while others may even be taking off for some exotic vacation! However you choose to spend the holiday, know that all of us at Outdoors Technologies wish you a very Merry Christmas. We are grateful for all our dealers here in the USA and the many we have overseas. We could not do it without you! Wishing you a safe and Happy 2026 that will also be here before you know it!

Here, at Outdoors Technologies, we have been asked how come folks can get struck by lightning when the sky is blue? Yes, this can/has really happened and that is how the term "bolts from the blue" came about. Lightning can strike within 10 - 25 miles from a thunderstorm. Also, did you know that the sound of thunder travels up to about 10 miles?

I must admit, I can be a weather geek at times! Hence the reason my kids have all called me "meteorologist mom" for a while now! (sometimes I actually think I missed my calling!!!) Colorado Springs has had some interesting weather the last few days.....sun, rain, clouds, sun, thunder, lightning, more rain, sun, hail....and all within a few hours! Of course, when that happens I often turn my StrikeAlert unit on to check it all out. This time around, I also found a lightning map that I could pull up for my area on weatherbug.com and it was awesome! Between watching the map AND my StrikeAlert, I was having a great time! You should check it out sometime for your area.

Hope all are staying safe and enjoying this time of the year. Before we know it, fall will be approaching, however there is no doubt that we still have many a days of needing to make sure we have our units close by.

This made me chuckle! Here in Colorado Springs, we have definitely been getting some good rain. We need it, so no complaining, however, I will say that I'm ready to see some sunshine along with the rain! Maybe like it was years ago......beautiful mornings, afternoon rains and back to beautiful evenings.

As everyone is getting ready for summer, let us just remind you to stay safe when you are enjoying the outdoors. Our units truly are life savers in many instances. If you'd like, go ahead and visit our website at www.strikealert.com and read some of our stories that our customers have shared with us, under Customer Reviews.

So, thunder was heard last night in Colorado, which means, it's time to get your StrikeAlerts out of your closets, put your batteries in that I'm sure you took out while they've not been in use (like you should!!!) and get ready for the season! Hearing it got me thinking on some things......see below for some tidbits! Inquiring minds want to know!

Is it possible to have thunder without lightning?

No, it is not possible to have thunder without lightning. Thunder starts as a shockwave from the explosively expanding lightning channel when a large current causes rapid heating. However, it is possible that you might see lightning and not hear the thunder because it was too far away. Sometimes this is called “heat lightning” because it occurs most often in the summer.

Did you know?

Lightning is one of the oldest observed natural phenomena on earth. It can be seen in volcanic eruptions, extremely intense forest fires (pyro cumulonimbus clouds), surface nuclear detonations, heavy snowstorms, in large hurricanes, and obviously, thunderstorms.

I'm going to share a myth versus fact page that I came across this morning with my coffee. Take a look, I think you'll be surprised at how many of us are doing things that we are not supposed to be doing.....because that is what we were told to do from our parents! Get educated and stay safe. The lightning season will be upon us before we know it.

Myth: If you're caught outside during a thunderstorm, you should crouch down to reduce your risk of being struck. Fact: Crouching doesn't make you any safer outdoors. Run to a substantial building or hard topped vehicle. If you are too far to run to one of these options, you have no other good alter...

Fall is definitely coming upon us, as you can feel it in the air. It's the time of the year when many of us can wear three different outfits all in one day! Make sure you get out and enjoy it. Take a drive to check on the colors of the leaves changing, grab a basket and go to an apple orchard and pick some apples, snuggle in with a good book and a cup of hot chocolate or apple cider. The suggestions are endless! One of our team member's is going to hit one more final camping trip and get an awesome hike in. However you choose to enjoy it, have a good time!

Before too much longer, many of you will be putting away your StrikeAlert for the season. We recommend that you take your batteries out for storing it for longer lengths of time, so consider this a "gentle reminder".

Tomorrow is the 4th of July and many folks will celebrate with a number of activities that will be held outdoors. There will be parades, concerts, soccer matches, fireworks, family fun and games. Take time to commemorate the passage of our Declaration of Independence, which is the founding document of the US, back on July 4, 1776. It's amazing how fireworks have been a part of this day since it's first celebration in 1977, with fireworks signifying national pride. Have a fun, safe holiday. Make sure to have your StrikeAlert handy, you'll never know when you will need it!

All of us at OTI wish you a Happy Independence Day!

Springtime in the Rockies! We are having an unbelievably beautiful day here in Colorado Springs and it would be great to be outside, enjoying the weather and the mountains, but, we all have work to do! Hoping whatever part of the country, whatever part of the world you are reading this from, you, too, are having a great day! We at OTI only have one job for you........take your StrikeAlert out of the closet, or the golf bag, or clean out your climbing gear, wherever else you may have put it for the winter and make sure it's in good working condition. Maybe it's time to upgrade from your personal lightning detector to our HD, which has definitely become our most popular unit. Please visit our website at www.strikealert.com and go to the product page to check it out! Shoot us an email right there from our website if you have any questions at all.

Enjoy this weather. Stay safe and stay happy!

Lightning kills more people on an annual basis than tornadoes, hurricanes or winter storms - so play it safe outdoors! Whether you're on the golf course, hiking or biking, or the kids are on the soccer field, use a StrikeAlert personal lightning detector to give you an early warning of the storm.

It is definitely getting closer to spring and many of us are ready for that! There's hints of green grass coming through the brown, dry ground that we've become accustomed to for the last few months. And, for those of you that live in the US you know what's coming up very early this coming Sunday morning? Yup, Day Light Savings Time, which means we'll lose an hour of sleep! With spring right around the corner, how about taking your StrikeAlert out of it's slumber and check it out to make sure you're ready for what will be here before we know it!

Happy Springtime to all. Enjoy this beautiful season that is coming upon us.

It is simply amazing that 2023 is coming to an end and before we know it, 2024 will be here. Sometimes it can seem as if our days go so slow, yet the years seem to fly by. We at Outdoors Technologies hope you all had a blessed Christmas and our hope is that you will have a safe New Years. As we all look forward to 2024, we wish you the best and hope for a positive and prosperous year ahead.

Amazing how Thanksgiving is just a couple of weeks away. Many of you have already "ordered your bird" and know of family that will be heading your way. Others of you know where you will be traveling to. Some of you are still wondering what the day will really mean for you. Wherever you are at with your plans, know that we at Outdoors Technologies are grateful for you, our awesome customers and dealers.

There was a quote that I ran across the other day and want to share with you. It was written by Douglas Wood, who is an American children's author, singer, songwriter, speaker and a wilderness guide, whom I believe still lives in Minnesota.

"The heart that gives thanks is a happy one, for we cannot feel thankful and unhappy at the same time".
