Based on the look of these three amps which would you assume is the loudest? On the left we have a VOX AC4. In the middle is a Fender tweed champ clone by Schematica. Lastly, we have a Fender 5E3, or Tweed Deluxe clone by Schematica. Although they are all small amps some maybe loud enough to play with a rock drummer.

Here are some pictures of the most recent state of my Silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve. The original cabinet was falling apart and very brittle. With this new pine cabinet it’s sturdier than ever before. This evening I applied some wood filler in the nail holes and hope to apply some Danish oil to finish it up and harden the pine. Let me know if you have ever refinished a cabinet before or if you are a fan of Danish oil as a wood finish.

Not going to lie. This repair was a tricky one. With everything looking so shiny and new it was hard to see the broken lead connections. I’m in the camp which believe solid core wire isn’t worth the hassle due to how fragile it can be. After multiple attempts to incorporate it on my scratch build project I ditched it for that exact reason. It breaks too often. As soon as you repair one lead a new one manages to break itself loose. Let’s hope it leads to a reliable signal when it’s all said and done.
This one had three different breaks. Now, I don’t fault the builder because it’s meticulously constructed. Kudos to them. Unfortunately, the choice of that wire may come back to haunt them due to lack of reliability. But this is just my two cents so take it for what it’s worth. The circuit is pretty clever. Assembling a 5e3 in such a small portable enclosure. It even included an effects loop to ad a twist to a classic amp. For something so small it packs a huge punch and can really be heard in a live setting.

Although the silvertone 1484 Twin Twelve is a highly desirable sound due to its circuitry, one of its pitfalls with this amp is the cabinet construction. Giving this 60 year old a facelift with a nice sturdy pine cabinet. A rundown video is on the horizon once it’s complete. . . . .

Here is the latest stage of my scratch build of a Princeton. I had a last minute aesthetic change.

I’ve also been working behind the scenes to be able to make the cabinet for the amp. Maybe some day I’ll be able to make a few more and only take a few days to make an amp haha 😂

Went to check out the new shop in town! has some beautiful and airline guitars in stock along with a tons of their original pedals. They even have totally affordable guitars and gear! Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to stop and play some stuff, but I was able to chat with the owner. They were super cool, down to earth, knowledgeable and approachable. Even from our brief conversation it was evident that he is passionate about his craft, his employees, his family, and the music scene in Asheville. They have unique vintage guitars, eclectic electric guitars, vintage amps, and a variety of original pedals. If you are in the area or looking for something unique you should check out Asheville Guitar Pedals!

Happy Holidays everyone! When times get rough and tough remember there is always music. Music is the way to express yourself when words seem to fall short.
This holiday season remember to support your local music scene because they work hard to provide those special moments we need to find our inner rhythm and leave all your worries at the door!
I cannot wait to get back to amp repairs and connecting with the amazing talent located here in Asheville, NC to keep them going and helping us connect in a community! Side note: If you are looking for a great studio/bed room amp that breaks up nicely the VOX AC4 is a great solution. Swap the speaker along with tubes and you’ll be surprised what tones you’ll find!

Just when I finally get going on my scratch build project my soldering iron craps out…oh well, that Weller worked great for two years. I am excited to be working towards my goals for this project and getting back into amps. It’s been a long several month hiatus and now I’m feeling ready to get back into working on amp. *Only after I finish this scratch build**
Progress coming soon!

Going to miss the gentlemen of ! It has been a pleasure and honor to get to know them over the last year. They are incredibly creative, knowledgeable, and original. I am very excited about my newest pedal the Arigato phaser vibrato. If you haven’t heard of Carolina Corporation you should definitely check out their iconic work! Cannot wait to play the Arigato through my rig and share a video!

Friends, it has been a minute since I’ve posted content. I have repaired a few amps over the past few months, but life has taken priority.
We are getting ready to move. Our relocation will pause any repairs and unfortunately hinder the musical community in Columbia. However, there are plans in place to pass the torch and take care of folks here in SC.
Here are some pics of a newer Supro. I enjoyed playing through this amp, yet, I have strong opinions about the design of this amp. For example the minimal clearance around the tubes make it challenging to remove them without hitting the sides of the glass envelope on the metal chassis.
Does anyone else find this amp to be enigmatic?

Apparently back in the 80’s or 90’s this thing had been “Hot rodded”. Now, I’ve heard lots of negative remarks about those mods. But, after getting to experiment with this amp it was pretty cool. It sounded like they basically wired bridged the input jacks so you could blend both channel’s together. Definitely one of a kind.
