Poco App The simplest music assessment created by band director Elliott Wittstruck. No student accounts neede I decided to create Poco! That's what I hope Poco does!

Being hired as a high school band director, I knew what I wanted my students to play and the sequence I wanted them to learn and perform certain skills; however, I was craving for something that was affordable without all of the unwanted features. The software is efficient and doesn't require a lot of computing power, allowing it to be cheaper and more accessible. My goal is to give accessibility to software no matter your program's size!

Just because you’re practicing, doesn’t mean you’re getting better. Be sure to practice with intent, because WHAT and HOW you practice are the things you’re instilling in your brain.

It’s more effective to have smaller practice sessions if they’re more focused than the larger, go-through-the-motion practice sessions.

As stated in an earlier post, it’s a great idea to keep a practice journal. You can record the WHAT and the HOW and make sure they’re staying consistent between sessions, so you’re not practicing incorrectly. 👍🏼 🎶 🎻 🎷

Do what you LOVE!

As musicians, we often find ourselves having to do tasks that don’t exactly align with our interests or desires in order to do what we desire. Just remember that you’re doing THIS to do THAT later.

Do what others won’t NOW to do what others can’t LATER.

Don’t try to tackle the entire chunk; break it down into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Find the smaller phrases and work on them individually.

When you try and tackle the entire excerpt, you’ll miss the fine details throughout, or it won’t be to the level of excellence you desire.

Use the smaller chunks to give you trackable, and obtainable goals for the duration it takes to learn the entire excerpt. The smaller chunks also gives you checkpoints during a performance. You successfully perform the first chunk, then move on to the second and so forth, making performances less stressful.

Keep a practice journal. You can use a practice journal to write down future goals, accomplished tasks, and daily material covered.

Using a practice journal allows you to go back and review what you have accomplished in previous practice sessions before starting your new session. It can be used as a point of reflection.

Another way to use a practice journal would be as a progress tracker. You write down what you’re working on and what’s difficult/easy. As you progress, you can see how things become easier and you become more fluent with your instrument!

It’s not always necessary to block out large chunks of time to practice, break it up into smaller practice sessions.

Smaller sessions do two things: less time so you have to choose fewer goals, fewer goals force you to be more focused.

Smaller - focused on a single goal - practice sessions can be more beneficial than one large session where you have multiple goals that all don’t quite get accomplished.
