Lately, something has been going on regarding talks of usage of AI among Christians.
AI is simply a tool. A well-versed tool. ChatGPT, Grok, and others are effectively advanced web-crawlers that "chat" with you in ways that you can understand.
It can take highly complicated thoughts and ideas and simplify them so that you "get" it. But there SHOULD be extra caution when using these tools.
Here’s a practical checklist anyone should keep in mind when using AI for things of faith:
1. Scripture is the final authority.
AI can provide background, language notes, or historical insights, but its answers MUST ALWAYS be measured against the Word (2 Timothy 3:16–17).
2. Ask with precision.
Frame questions narrowly (e.g., “What does φόβητρα mean in Luke 21:11 in Koine Greek?” vs. “What does this verse mean for me?”). The more specific the ask, the less room there is for speculation or misleading responses.
3. Seek proof points.
Always ask for references (Greek text, lexicons, historical sources, commentaries). This way you can verify and not just accept.
4. Pray before and after.
James 1:5 says if you lack wisdom, ask God. Even if you gather facts through AI, wisdom in how to use them comes only from the Spirit.
5. Avoid “authority transfer.”
Treat AI as a conversation partner, not a teacher. Like a library index, it can point, but you decide which book to open. Again, always ask for references beyond AI.
6. Check community discernment.
When you land on a new insight, weigh it with trusted Christian voices (pastors, study groups). This prevents isolation and error.
7. Watch for drift.
If curiosity ever leads you into ideas that contradict the core of the gospel (the lordship of Christ, salvation by grace), hit pause. That’s where discernment guards against deception.
These steps will help you learn and STILL give proper authority where it belongs - with God. What does this mean for the believer? Truth without compromise.
Weigh HEAVILY the questions you ask. Stand firm on your beliefs and, if something comes up that you weren't expecting or is taught differently than you've heard before, ASK your pastor or a strong leader in the faith.
Finally, NEVER ask AI for its opinion. It should never provide you with an opinion.
Keeping these things in mind, AI can be a great tool for learning things and connecting dots. These latter days will be filled with knowledge, but never forsake the spiritual growth. Read your Bible, pray often, submit to God's authority.
