It is a big week at Lifeline Technology Solutions. Matt celebrated his birthday yesterday, Maria is celebrating today, and Rebecca's is tomorrow ... Three birthdays across three consecutive days. On a team this size, that's quite something.

Each of them plays a different role in keeping this team running and our clients well looked after. This week is a good reminder of how lucky we are to have all three of them. Happy birthday, Matt, Maria, and Rebecca!

Nothing about that email raised any concern. The sender name was familiar. The message matched previous conversations. There was an attachment with a short note asking for a quick review.

Within minutes of opening the file, documents started locking, shared folders became inaccessible, and a 12-person accounting firm in New Jersey was dealing with a ransomware incident.

There was no warning. It started with something routine, during a normal workday. For many small businesses, most incidents begin exactly like this. Something that fits right into a busy morning.

The businesses that hold up best tend to have security layers that are working together (and reviewed regularly) so when something does get through, there's a next line of coverage.

We put together a full breakdown of what actually protects small businesses: https://lifelinetechsolutions.com/resources/cybersecurity-for-small-businesses-nj/

Continuing our team series, we're introducing Matt Helm, Chief Technology Officer at Lifeline Technology Solutions.

Matt is the technical backbone behind a lot of what Lifeline delivers: network design, security audits, compliance work, and complex projects that require both deep expertise and careful planning. He has a background in cybersecurity and a degree in Computer Information Systems, and he brings a consultative mindset to everything he works on. He is focused on solutions that hold up long term, not just fixes that close a ticket.

Clients tend to notice the results (stable systems, smooth audits, fewer recurring issues), even when the work itself happens quietly behind the scenes.

When he is not working, Matt plays guitar, attends as many rock concerts as possible, and roots for the New York Mets. He lives with his wife, two cats and a dog.

Most small businesses are using AI tools these days – for writing, scheduling, getting through the day faster. That's a good use of technology.

What AI tools don't do is manage your IT security. They don't monitor your network. They don't patch your systems. They don't respond when something breaks or flag unusual activity on your accounts.

Using AI tools well and having your IT properly managed serve different purposes. Both are worth doing right.

If you're not sure your current setup is covering the right bases, a free IT consultation is a good place to start. We'll walk you through what you have and give you an honest picture.

Here's a number worth pausing on: 79% of small businesses experienced a cyberattack in the past five years. But 64% of small business owners still don't consider themselves an attractive target.

Most business owners we speak with have some form of protection in place (antivirus, a firewall, basic passwords) and feel reasonably covered. The issue is that most of those setups haven't been reviewed recently, aren't actively monitored, and weren't designed for the way threats work today.

60% of small businesses that experience a cyberattack close within six months. Recovery costs (downtime, data loss, emergency support) add up fast.

If you're not sure your current setup is solid, a free IT consultation is a good place to start. We'll walk through what you have, identify any gaps, and give you an honest picture of where things stand.

If you'd like us to go deeper on this in a future article, let us know in the comments.

Continuing our team series: this week we are introducing Rebecca LoBello, Chief Operating Officer at Lifeline Technology Solutions.

Rebecca is the person behind the coordination, the vendor relationships, the scheduling, and the steady hand that keeps day-to-day operations on track. She came to IT after a career in television, and she brought with her a people-first mindset and a genuine belief that technology should be tailored to the client, not the other way around.

She is proactive by nature, which means she is often thinking about what a client might need before they have to ask.

Find out more about our team: https://lifelinetechsolutions.com/about/

Outside the office, Rebecca is a Yankees and Devils fan, a beach lover, and someone who goes straight for the dessert menu. She is married with three children, which, as she would tell you, is excellent training for multitasking.

Stay tuned for our next team introduction.

Here is a number most business owners have never actually calculated.

A 20-person firm loses six hours of productivity to a system outage. At $35 per fully loaded employee hour, that is $4,200 in payroll sitting idle. Add ten billable staff at $75 per hour and you are looking at $4,500 in lost revenue on top of that.

One incident. $8,700. And that is before rescheduling, catch-up work, or any repair costs.

The part that catches people off guard is what caused it. It's not a major failure, but usually something small that had been building quietly: a server low on disk space, a backup that hadn't been checked, a firmware update that never got done.

Proactive IT support catches those things before they reach your team. If your current setup feels unpredictable, we are happy to take a look.

Something we are seeing across the businesses we support right now: spam and spoofing are up, and the tactics are getting harder to spot.

Four things worth flagging for you and your team:

1. Email spoofing is more convincing. Attackers are impersonating vendors, banks, and internal senders. Verify any unusual request through a separate channel before acting.
2. QR code phishing is real. Codes showing up in emails, texts, and physical mail are being used to redirect people to fake login pages. If you did not initiate the interaction, do not scan.
3. Voicemail and text scams create false urgency. Slow down, verify independently, and never call back a number provided in the message.
4. AI-generated phishing is harder to catch. Well-written, professional-looking scam emails are now common.

Treat suspicious requests with skepticism regardless of how polished they look. If anything feels off, forward it to us before you do anything else. That's what we are here for.

Working with a proactive IT partner means you have someone watching for this stuff before it becomes a problem, and someone to call the moment something feels off. If you want to talk through where your current coverage stands, or you are not sure you have the right protection in place, we are happy to take a look.

We are starting a series introducing the team behind Lifeline Technology Solutions. And there is no better place to start than with Jason Michaels, our founder and owner.

Jason has worked in IT for decades as a technician, a network architect, a support lead, and eventually the person responsible for building and running a company. That experience gives him a clear picture of what good IT support looks like, and what it tends to look like when it falls short.

He started Lifeline to do it differently: honest service, direct communication (no call centers!) ... real people who pick up the phone and know who you are when you call.

That is still exactly what Lifeline delivers, and Jason makes sure of it every day.

Stay tuned as we introduce the rest of the team over the coming weeks.

Yesterday was Take Your Child to Work Day, and our COO Rebecca brought in two junior team members for the day.

They set up at the desks, took over the beanbags, and got a full tour of the Lifeline van, which was, by all accounts, the most important part of the visit.

It is a good reminder of what makes a small business different. Everyone gets a real look at what we do, and nobody is too busy to stop and show a curious kid around.

Happy Take Your Child to Work Day from the Lifeline team.
