Please join us today to grieve the loss of Crete Police Chief Gary Young.

FUNERAL ATTENDANCE

The public is welcome to attend the funeral service, which will begin at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 3, at Ag Hall at Tuxedo Park in Crete.

Ag Hall will be open at 9:00 a.m. Monday. Officers will be on site to direct parking.

Following the funeral and law enforcement honors, there will be a procession to transport Chief Young to his final resting place at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.

PROCESSION INFORMATION

The public is invited to line the procession route both in Crete and in Lincoln to pay their respects to Chief Young. The procession is expected to depart Ag Hall at approximately 11:00 a.m. and travel along the following route:

IN CRETE: Depart Ag Hall and travel south on Tuxedo Park Road. Turn east on W 13th Street/Highway 33 to exit Crete. Travel on Highway 33 toward Lincoln. The Saline County Sheriff’s Office will provide traffic control in Crete.

IN LINCOLN: Enter Lincoln northbound on S 14th Street. Continue northbound on S 14th Street until arriving at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. The Lincoln Police Department will provide traffic control at major intersections in Lincoln.

Members of the public are encouraged to line the route in Crete or Lincoln, but not on the highway route between the two communities. Public should NOT park on the route itself.

LIVE STREAM
The direct rtmp link is: rtmp://x.rtmp.youtube.com/live2 and the stream will also appear live at www.youtube.com/nestatepatrol.

The live stream will begin at 9:50 a.m. and will remain on until the procession concludes at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. The service will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is expected to last approximately 45 minutes, after which time the procession will depart Crete and travel to Lincoln. If technology cooperates, the live stream will include an aerial view of the procession from the NSP AirWing. If the live aerial stream doesn’t work, the live stream will end when the procession departs Ag Hall.

We at the Crete Police Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all who have shared their sentiments for Chief Gary Young, Jr. following his passing on Monday, July 27th, 2026.

Chief Young's family is making his final arrangements and we would like to share some of the details here for anyone who would like to attend. These arrangements are as follows:

10 am: Funeral Service Begins

Following the funeral service, a law enforcement procession will es**rt Chief Young to Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

Today, Governor Jim Pillen issued a statement following the passing of the Crete Police Chief Gary Young, Jr. Gov. Pillen offered his deepest sympathies to Young’s family, friends, and the Crete community.

“The selflessness that our police officers show every day when protecting our communities is something I never take for granted. With more than 40 years on the force, Chief Young was engaged and committed to the community he served. By those who knew him, he was an outstanding public servant, whose involvement in Crete extended beyond law enforcement.”

Gov. Pillen said flags will be lowered on the day of Chief Young’s interment. Additional information will be released prior.

City of Crete departments and staff are deeply saddened by the passing yesterday, July 27, of Chief of Police Gary Young. He served the Crete Police Department honorably for 41 years and was appointed Chief in 2022. A true public servant, Young was dedicated to the safety of his community and worked hard to make sure the department and officers in his command were successful in meeting the needs of residents. His commitment to the highest ideals of law enforcement and service to the Crete community will not be forgotten.

The thoughts of City of Crete staff are with his family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time.
