The origins of UDIE harken back to the visionary ideas of Mutt, a man with explosive imagination. He envisioned an organization of Underwater Dive Instructors and Explorers who wouldn't be hampered by the constraints of Training Standards, universally accepted safe dive practices, common sense, or any other sense. Mutt clearly saw through the follies of then - current dive training. Only a clean s
weep would suffice for this man. No "Rule of Thirds" to force perfectly complacent divers to have to monitor their air supplies for this oracle. No continuous guideline to entangle the thoughts of this prophet. No backup lights for this beacon of the dive community. No redundant gas supplies for this intellectual breath of fresh air. No buying costly SofnoLime instead of perfectly fine looking kitty litter for this frugal thinker. Mutt realized that he had to eliminate all the frills in his Bogarthian vision of streamlined dive training. And what simpler way to streamline training than to eliminate it? Charge for the card, then deliver what we promise; no frills - no skills. He simultaneously takes PADI to its logical conclusion and beats them to it. Mutt is the author of the keystone training manuals "Thirds Are For Turds" and "Ascending Empty - The Art of The Bubble-less Exit." He still lists "The Bible" as required reading for all UDIE tech divers. The Torah or Koran are optional.
