More Than 50 Years Later the RadioShack Legacy Lives On
Some businesses become more than a place to shop. They become part of a community’s history, and Stereo Center RadioShack is one of those businesses.
The story began in 1973 when Rex Helms started Stereo Center. A few years later, around 1977, he acquired a RadioShack franchise, creating a business that would go on to serve generations of customers in Cullman.
Danny Crigger became part of that story in 1988. While still in high school, he began working for RadioShack corporate. Later that year, he left the corporate store and joined Rex at Stereo Center RadioShack as an installer.
For decades, the business was primarily located in the North Shopping Center. After RadioShack corporate closed in January 2015, Stereo Center RadioShack moved into the former corporate location in the Town Square.
In 2019, Danny was given the opportunity to purchase the store when Rex decided to retire.
Today, Danny and his son Dalton continue the business together, helping customers with home audio, car audio, marine audio, surveillance cameras, parts and the consumer electronics RadioShack has always been known for.
Stereo Center RadioShack is now the only RadioShack in North Alabama and one of just four remaining in the state.
But perhaps the most special part of the story is what lies ahead. Danny hopes to eventually pass the business down to Dalton, keeping Stereo Center RadioShack within the family for another generation.
What Rex started more than 50 years ago continues today, with a father and son carrying a piece of Cullman history into the future.
