The below image was an advertisement that I ran back in 1997/1998 while I was CEO of PCS Telecom.

My VP of Marketing (Shelly Green) was a genius and we ran this in full color in a dozen different magazines.

Let's think about it for a second. 1997 - 1998.

We all still had house phones. Less than 20% of the population even had a cell phone. Internet? You mean Dialup AOL?

No broadband, no high-speed internet, no satellite service, no apps on cellphones, no mobile hotspots.

Being connected was not a thing as it is now for the average person.

For a telecommunications company selling switching platforms, it was critical. Hence, why the marketing plan worked so well.

So, now almost 30 years later, everything is connected and we tend to freak out and even panic when we aren't online.

Progress??

Honestly, I am not sure.

I am a member of several homesteading and off-grid living groups and to be very honest, I don't think that most people truly understand that, not could they survive it.

When I am reading group posts from people saying how off-grid they are, I laugh. Umm.. you're posting on Facebook, that is about as far from off-grid as it gets!!!

Everything communicates.

Your electric meter talks to the power company and monitors your usage. Your vehicle talks to the manufacturer and sends service reminders, your thermostat talks to your phone, your refrigerator sends you text messages when a filter needs to be changed.

Your smart phone talks to your smart watch and your Alexia at home, well.... she listens to EVERYTHING.

Again, Progress???

Could you totally disconnect?

When my eyes open each morning, the firs words out of my mouth are "Alexia, Time". Then from that to "Alexia Forecast" and onto "Alexia BBC World News". This is as I am reaching for my phone to see what text messages I missed overnight and to check for camera alerts around the property.

The electronic universe now knows that I am awake starts it's own plan for me for the day. From pop-up ads, to pre-set stations in the truck, everything that I hear, see and interact with has something to do with communication taking place in the background, between computers, servers, satellites and towers.

What to have some fun? Say a key phrase in front of your Alexia or if you don't have one google search something obscure on your phone. Then see what happens.

If I say: "Alexia, how do you cook octopus" then for the next few days I will get all kinds of suggested things related to octopus.

God forbid if you ask Alexia about a extended car warranty!!!!

The bottom like is that we are all connected, far more than we can ever understand. There is no "off-grid", there is no getting away from it.

We're lost without it.

Used iPhone Deals...

For the month of August, I am going to blow out some used inventory to make room for some new and exciting things.

With over 500 laptops in storage, desktops and more electronic items than ever before it's time to start moving stuff.

I have these five iPhones tested, at the shop and ready to go.

AUGUST!!!!

It's hard to believe that it's already August, before we know it we'll be seeing Christmas decorations in the local windows and online.

July was pretty rough and I apologize that the store was closed more than it was open. My wife had two World Championship horse shows and two regional shows.

Across multiple associations, she is now in the top five in the world, Rated #2 with PHBA and #4 with ABRA and #5 with AQHA. I can not express how proud I am of her and our horses.

It's been six weeks on the road and now a small four week break.

What does that mean??

THE STORE IS OPEN. Yes, we are going to be around for most of August and business hours will be pretty regular.

Right now I have just over 40 open service tickets and items being repaired in the shop and onsite service calls that need my attention.

If you bring in a phone, we are still fixing those same day. Tablets are on a 2-day schedule, computers depend on parts needed and televisions are still a month+ for repair.

As we get caught up, those numbers will get better and we'll be able to turn things around more quickly. We are also having some massive delivery issues with packages going between Jacksonville and Tallahassee and never making it into Cuthbert.

I'll run some specials and do some advertising, but just wanted to let everyone know that we are here..

This is why I have been closed all week. My wife is showing at the world show.

Randolph Counties Linda Kruszka has won Reserve World Champion at the 2026 Palomino World Show in Springfield Illinois this morning.

This is the 2020 Geldings sixth world championship.

Additionally her newest horse from Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses placed 4th in the World in her class.

A huge thank you to all of our local support including Whatley Plumbing for an amazing barn water system, Devane Tire for keeping horse trailers and trucks on the road, First State Bank, Black Iron Equine, Cliff Gill, Top Bait, Ted Milliron Farms and Eufaula Animal Hospital.

It take a village and we’ve got some amazing locals helping us.

Linda Kruszka, Arent I Something and TB Shez Wear N Gold all reside in Coleman on Tagalong Ranch.

Since we will not be open on Friday.. It's FREE EGG WEDNESDAY.We have about 20 dozen, free to Randolph locals.

Off to two World Shows with my wife. Store hours will be back to normal come September.

We are over fifty service tickets behind at the moment, but working as fast as we can to get stuff out the door before we leave for break.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

I know that we really need the rain, but enough already. My garden looks amazing, however I am starting to feel like a duck.

As many of you know, my wife is very active in the horse world and shows all around the country. She is currently rated #5, #6 & #7 in the country in her respective classes.

Over the next four weeks, are the three biggest shows of the year, one here in Georgia starting this week, then two World Shows one in Oklahoma and another Illinois which she has qualified for.

So my hours at the store are going to be erratic to say the least as I travel with her to help.

Before you go "oh wow" It's not as glamorous as it sounds. She gets to compete and win, I get to shovel horse p**p and groom horses.

But I could not be more proud of her and all she has accomplished as Tagalong Ranch continues to do so well.

With that said....

This Month:

6/22 -Half Day (Closing at 1pm)
6/25 -Closed
6/30 -Closed

July

11th - 18th - Closed
26th - August 3rd - Closed

Then we are back to normal shows around the region until October so my hours will be a lot more focused going into the fall.

Meanwhile, try to stay dry and PLEASE keep your electronics dry..

Wow, I just realized that it's been almost a month since I have posted an update or some of the things happening here at Rustic Technologies.

What's the old saying? I've been as busy as a one armed paper hanger.

With horse show season in full swing, I have been away from the store sometime one or two days a week as I travel with my wife to her shows. The last month has seen trips to Texas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and around Georgia. This will continue for the next few months and then start to slow down as fall gets here.

I have to admit, it's nice to get away from Randolph County from time to time, but it was just as hot in Texas, just no gnats!!!!

Repairs have been going strong and steady at the shop. Watch batteries, phone screen repairs, laptop repairs and virus removals continue to come in daily. So, I sincerely thank the local community for all of their support.

We've had a few very nice iPhones and a few laptops come in on trade recently as well. So, if you are in need of a new phone or laptop please stop by.

As the summer progresses we will have some back to school specials, discounts to local students and some sales that will save you a lot on all in stock items.

One of my problems with attending shows with my wife is that it takes me away from the farm some of the chores which include watering our garden. Over the last few weeks, I've gotten over two hundred plants into the ground and they need their daily watering.

So, I've started to play around with WiFi enabled watering systems.

The device attaches to your garden faucet using an easy app, you can schedule times for the water to turn on and off, and for how long. It also monitors the weather and will cancel any scheduled watering if it's raining out.

I've found that to be less reliable as my weather app may say that it's raining in Randolph County and in reality it is not or the forecast says no rain and it's pouring outside. Are weather forecasts ever correct?

Anyway.. With a few dollars in 1/4" flex tubing and nozzles and this faucet controller, I can automate the entire process.

Now, you have to have WiFi coverage in your garden area, which I do. If you do not, you physically need to be at the controller in order to program it. However with WiFi, you can program it, turn it on or off from anywhere in the world.

I've started to set up zones where certain plants get more water or watered more often during the day than others.

Isn't technology grand!!!!!

Now if only there was a robot to w**d for me...
