Anthropic recently issued a warning about the pace of AI development, raising concerns that frontier AI may be moving faster than our institutions are prepared to govern.

It is a serious warning.

But for businesses, the practical question may be a little different:

Has the horse already left the barn?

AI is already showing up in productivity tools, customer service platforms, coding tools, vendor products, employee workflows, and third-party integrations.

Most businesses are not building frontier AI models. They are deciding whether to approve connectors, allow new tools, connect AI to client data, or trust platforms that have quietly added AI features.

That is where the real-world risk lives.

This is such a real-world AI security “oops” moment.

Someone recently shared that they searched for ChatGPT, clicked a result that looked right, and ended up on a different AI platform.

The person was embarrassed because they are very tech literate. They know what to look for. They understand security.

They were just rushing.

And honestly, that is exactly why this matters.

Most people are not trying to do anything risky. They are trying to get work done. But when AI tools, sponsored search results, lookalike apps, and browser extensions all look similar, one quick click can send company information somewhere it was never intended to go.

This is why businesses need clear guidance on which AI tools are approved, where employees should access them, and what information should never be entered into an unapproved platform.

Because sometimes shadow AI starts with a very human sentence:

That's not a bad thing. In many ways, it's a sign that organizations are moving beyond the hype and starting to think strategically about adoption.

Not exactly a “Feel Good Friday” post today.

But honestly? This one matters more.

We’ve been getting a LOT of requests lately from clients wanting to approve AI plug-ins and integrations into Microsoft 365 environments.
And trust me — we get it.

Everyone is looking for ways to save time, automate repetitive work, and keep up with how fast the world is moving right now. The pressure to “not fall behind” with AI is very real.

But in the rush to click “approve,” many businesses are overlooking something important:
AI tools can create very real security, compliance, and confidentiality risks if they are not evaluated properly before deployment.
This isn’t just about Microsoft 365.

Any AI tool connected to your email, documents, cloud storage, line-of-business apps, or employees can potentially expose sensitive data in ways organizations never intended.

We’re seeing:
• AI tools receiving broader access than expected
• Sensitive business and client information leaving organizations quietly
• Employees unknowingly sharing confidential data into third-party AI platforms
• Compliance exposure that leadership didn’t realize existed until after deployment
AI absolutely has a place in business.

But “faster” should never come at the expense of visibility, governance, and security.

AI governance may arrive through insurers, vendors and operational expectations long before formal regulation fully catches up.

For many businesses, the safest and most practical path forward is probably not employees piecing together disconnected public AI tools across departments with little oversight. It is more likely using the AI capabilities already being built into trusted enterprise platforms that already provide governance controls, audit logging, identity management and administrative oversight.
