Your IT team is not your cybersecurity team.

That’s not a criticism. It’s a staffing reality most companies don’t discover until it’s too late.
IT keeps the lights on. Cybersecurity keeps the criminals out. Two different jobs. Two different mindsets. Most companies have one and call it the other.

The NMFTA Cybersecurity Best Practices Guidebook lists the foundational controls every fleet must have in place. When we conduct a comprehensive fleet security audit, we find gaps in those basics more often than not. Not because companies were careless. Because the people responsible for them were never trained to think like an attacker.

Nobody skipped anything on purpose. The fundamentals just never got done properly because the people doing them didn’t know what properly looked like from a security standpoint.

When did you last ask your IT team or MSP to prove your security posture, not report on it, but actually prove it?

You don't rise to the occasion. You fall to the level of your preparation.

Every trucking company we have worked with through an active incident proves that out. The ones who recovered fastest were not the ones with the biggest budgets. They were the ones who had already had the hard conversation in a conference room before they had to have it in a crisis.

The NMFTA Cargo Crime Framework, real ransomware claim data, and years of post-incident work all point to the same conclusion: rehearsal is the variable that separates recovery from disaster.

Our latest blog makes the case. Link in comments.

Melanie Padron is bringing Proof to Profit to the NMFTA Convention this year. If your team needs to have this conversation before then, let's talk.

If an incident started today, would your team execute or improvise?

64% of closed cyber claims in 2025 were resolved with zero out-of-pocket loss. (Coalition 2026)
That stat gets dismissed as luck. It isn't.

Those organizations had practiced their response before the incident required it. They knew who called the insurance carrier. They knew who made the ransom decision. They knew how long restoration would take because they had actually timed it. The ones who hadn't practiced? They were making all of those decisions for the first time, under pressure, with the clock running.

The NMFTA Cargo Crime Framework is explicit: incident response plans must be tested, not filed.

We wrote about what that difference actually costs. Link in comments.

Which side of that statistic does your organization land on?

Ransomware hits at 6:12 a.m. Dispatch is down. Drivers are calling. Customers are calling.
And nobody on the leadership team is sure who's actually in charge.

That moment, the one where everyone looks at each other, is what happens when a plan exists but nobody has ever walked through it out loud. We have run tabletop exercises where that question stopped the room cold inside the first five minutes.

A plan that has never been rehearsed is not a plan. It's a document.

Our latest blog covers the five decisions that must be made before the incident, not during it. Link in comments.

Does your leadership team know their role before it happens, or would they be figuring it out in real time?

We asked a fleet executive when they last did a full restore from backup.

"We tested it when we set it up."

That was four years and two software migrations ago. The backup still ran every night. Nobody had touched it since the original configuration. That's not a safety net. That's a feeling of safety with nothing underneath it.

Our latest blog, anchored in real ransomware claim data and the NMFTA Cargo Crime Framework, breaks down the three questions that reveal your actual backup posture.

When did your organization last re-earn its backup confidence?

Ransomware doesn't care that you have backups.

It cares whether those backups are connected to the same network it just encrypted.
It cares whether your recovery time is hours or weeks.
It cares whether you've ever actually tested a full restoration under pressure.

The NMFTA Cargo Crime Framework calls out EOL device management, encryption, and network segmentation as controls that determine whether you can even reach your backups at all.

Most fleets don't have all three in place.

We wrote about what that gap actually costs in our latest blog. (Link in the comment section)

If ransomware encrypted your systems at 2 a.m. tonight, would your backups be reachable — and could your team restore operations before your customers started looking for another carrier?

"We have backups."

In a cyber-attack, that sentence is too often followed by: "We just never proved they actually work."

70% of ransomware claims in 2025 involved both encryption AND data theft.

Average ransom demands crossed $1 million for the first time.

86% of victims who refused to pay had one thing in common: tested backups.

The word "tested" is doing a lot of work in that last sentence.

Not verified. Not configured. Actually restored from, under realistic conditions, against a clock.

We broke down what real backup validation looks like in our latest blog.

Here's a control most fleets have never implemented — and criminals are counting on that.

Role-Based Access Control for vendors.

Your vendors should have access to what they need. Nothing more.

If your TMS provider's support team can see your entire customer database when they only need to troubleshoot billing, that's not a relationship. That's an exposure.

The NMFTA's Cargo Crime Prevention Framework flags this exact gap.

Our new blog breaks down what vendor access management actually looks like — and what it costs when you skip it.

Stay tuned: Melanie Padron is bringing Proof to Profit to the NMFTA Convention. This is exactly the kind of gap she'll be addressing on stage.

If you audited your vendors' access levels today, how many would have permissions they no longer need — and how long have those doors been open?

"We trust our vendors."

That sentence has appeared in post-breach reports more times than anyone in this industry wants to admit.

Trusted vendors get compromised. Trusted vendors have disgruntled employees. Trusted vendors run software that hasn't been patched since the contract was signed.

The NMFTA Cargo Crime Framework is explicit: organized criminal networks are infiltrating vendors specifically to gain access to the transportation companies those vendors serve.

Your vendor's breach is your breach.
Your vendor's negligence is your liability.

Your freight didn't disappear because someone broke in.

It disappeared because someone logged in.

Stolen credentials. A compromised load board account. A fraudulent carrier with a real FMCSA number.

And your freight was gone before anyone knew he'd been there.

The NMFTA recently released a Cybersecurity Cargo Crime Reduction Framework that names online freight platform exploitation as one of six active threat vectors being used against trucking companies right now.

Not theoretical. Not "could happen." Happening.

We wrote a full breakdown in our latest blog. Read it before someone else proves you needed to.

If a criminal logged into your load board today using stolen credentials — would anyone on your team know within the hour?
