Steps to Effectiveness
In a recent conversation, the Company Leader said he was looking to find ways to be more efficient. There is great value in being efficient, however, in Aldridge Kerr’s opinion, it ranks second when creating a strong organization foundation.

Creating an effective organization is the ultimate goal as it allows for even more than just efficiency. This is a topic we regularly discuss in previous newsletters: Efficiency Begins with Effectiveness and The Efficiency Myth. A great friend of Aldridge Kerr’s summarizes the difference between the two well:
“To be efficient is to climb a ladder quickly and well; to be effective is to make sure the ladder is leaning up against the right wall.” Eddie Reeves

Now more than ever, Companies need to assess how effective they are, regardless of whether COVID has brought amazing opportunities or if it has introduced some real challenges. Effectiveness is the first step for creating efficiencies, focusing on quality, building repeatable processes, and establishing internal controls. To consider:
> Do you have clarity on your Company’s focus and priorities? Does your Team understand them as well?
> Is it time to step back and reassess the products and/or services being offered? Are they still relevant in this changing world?

Ensuring you have an effective organization is that first step to position you and your Team for sustainability and growth.

The Year of the "Re"

2020 has shaped up to be a year unique, challenging, and like few others. We have started referring to it as the “Year of the ‘Re’” with organizations needing to re-invent, re-mobilize, re-adjust, re-focus, re-engage, and re-charge. In addition, building repeatable processes will establish an operational foundation that mitigates risks and creates a sustainable organization as you manage the changes required this year.

The opportunity here is for each of us to come to terms with the need to “re” so that we can move forward. Here are some of what we have seen during this “Year of the ‘Re’”.
Re-invent: many organizations have been able to step back and find innovative, exciting new ways of moving forward
Re-mobilize: after the shut-down in the spring, organizations had the opportunity to jump back in and engage their Customers and Staff during this time of transition
Re-adjust: everything is “new” again as life has changed in 2020 and stepping up and adjusting to the “new” can create both challenges and opportunities
Re-focus: the ability to re-invent, re-mobilize, and re-adjust requires re-focus on what and how your organization will adapt to these changing times
Re-engage: we are privileged to work with our Clients as they look at the “re’s” and see the value of discovering next steps for their people, their processes, and their facilities. In fact, we are referencing this discovery methodology as re»engage™
Re-charge: as organizations assess the “re” possibilities, they can find innovative approaches in which to move forward

Each organization has different challenges and opportunities this year. Some have experienced substantial growth and expansion; while others are evaluating what is next and how to move forward. The goal during this “Year of the ‘Re’” is to build an environment that fosters repeatable processes that will create opportunities and sustainability during this time of transition.

Which "re" applies to you?

S I P D E
SIPDE is an acronym used for driver’s education and stands for Scan, Identify, Predict, Decide, and Execute. This aligns with the approach Aldridge Kerr uses when working with our Clients. Here is how it applies:

Scan your organization’s surroundings, environment, culture, and climate to better understand the existing state

Identify, as you scan, what challenges are facing your organization so you can clearly define what obstacles – and opportunities – are in front of you

Predict what happens if your organization continues down the existing path compared to what happens if you regroup so you can move forward

Decide what you want for your organization over the next 90 days and beyond. Create a plan that includes clearly identified tasks, timelines, risks, methods of communication, and what success looks like

Execute the plan you have defined to create ongoing resilience, sustainability, and growth.

This SIPDE approach is a great formula for taking your organization forward during these evolving times.

Re-invent – that’s an ominous word…Its definition is “to change something so much that it appears to be something new” and “to take up a very different approach.” As we reflect on history, several companies invented or re-invented themselves during difficult times, including Airbnb, Groupon, Uber, and Instagram to name a few.

As we continue to migrate through the changes brought on by COVID-19, this time affords us with the opportunity to step back and re-invent our products and services. As we do this, here are some questions to consider:
What products and services your Company offers will have minimal impact due to the changes created by COVID-19? Do you even know?
Do you need to assess your existing products and services to determine if they need a re-invention to stay relevant in this time of transition? Are there some products/services that will no longer be effective during this time?
What can your Company do to re-re-invent itself? Are those changes minor or will it require a completely different approach?
Companies have the challenge - and opportunity - during this time to hit the “reset” button so they are positioned for this time of transition. If we do not see this is a chance to re-invent, then we are missing the opportunities that can be created.

Are you overwhelmed with the what, how, and when to re-invent your Company’s services and products? We can facilitate a session (virtually, of course) to help you evaluate what your options are as you re-invent through this time. Contact me at [email protected] to discuss further.

This is what our Clients have said about our facilitation services: “We had struggled for almost a year trying to take what we wanted to do and bring it to reality. The session Aldridge Kerr facilitated allows us to identify what was important and what we needed to do to make it happen. Now we can accomplish what we wanted to do in less than 60 days!”
