Having been part of the AI world for a while now, I hear it all — people who hate it, people who think it's no threat at all, and people convinced we're headed straight for Judgment Day. Here's what I tell them:
Worried about AI? You're not powerless.
Aviation changed the world — but we tested planes until failure was nearly impossible. With AI, we're deploying first and defining safety later.
Here's what you can actually do:

Pay attention to what's being built and who's building it
Support organizations pushing for real safeguards
Talk about it — with friends, family, coworkers

Whether you're excited or nervous about AI, it's going to affect you either way. That makes it worth being part of the conversation.
The goal isn't to stop AI. It's to make sure we're still the ones steering it.

Most people don’t realize how much of their digital life runs through Google.

A large share of internet searches happen through Chrome and Chromium-based browsers. That includes not just Chrome itself, but browsers built on the same underlying engine. The main exception is Mozilla Firefox, which uses its own engine.

So over time, a lot of what you do online passes through Google’s ecosystem in some way.

Searches.
YouTube history.
Location data.
Voice commands.
Emails.
Documents.
Devices you’ve signed into.

At the time, all of it made sense.
You searched something because you needed an answer.
You watched videos because you were learning or killing time.
You used Google services because they worked well and stayed in sync across everything.

None of that feels like “data collection” in the moment. It just feels convenient.

Then you run Google Takeout.

I recently pulled my own archive, and it came out to over 700 GB. It took about 5 days for Google to compile everything before I could even download it.

That’s not just files you remember saving. That’s history. Logs. Metadata. Activity records going back years.

It puts into perspective how much has been tracked and stored simply from normal, everyday use.

And this is where the current conversation around AI starts to connect.

A lot of people are frustrated that their data, content, or behavior may be used to train systems. But the reality is that this kind of data collection and modeling has been happening for a long time. The systems have been learning from user behavior for years to improve search results, recommendations, and ads.

AI didn’t introduce the idea of using data. It made the results of that data more visible.

If you’ve never used Google Takeout, it’s worth doing once just to see the scope of it. Not as a warning, just as a reality check on how much information builds up over time when you use connected services every day.

Because most people don’t notice it while it’s happening.

AI is not a trend. It is a tool.

And it didn’t just show up overnight.

AI has been developing for decades, long before most people were paying attention. What many people casually called “algorithms” were early forms of machine learning and automation, quietly running behind the scenes in search engines, recommendations, logistics, and software.

What changed wasn’t its existence. What changed was accessibility.

In the early 2020s, especially with tools like ChatGPT, AI became something anyone could use. It moved from being hidden in code to something you can interact with directly. That’s why it feels sudden. But the foundation has been building for years.

And if you’re paying attention, even major voices in tech are saying the same thing. There’s a growing sense that we’re in a defining moment, similar to the early days of the internet, where something big is shifting fast.

Now the cat is out of the bag, and it’s not going back in.

This isn’t just another program. It’s a shift in how work gets done.

We’ve seen this before with the internet, smartphones, and cloud computing. Go back further, and you see the same pattern with the shift from horse and buggy to automobiles, or the rise of machines and robotics in factories.

Each time, people underestimated the change. Each time, early adopters gained an advantage. And each time, those who ignored it had to catch up later, usually under pressure.

Right now, many people still see AI as a gimmick or something unreliable. That’s because they’re only seeing the surface.

Underneath, it’s already transforming real work—automation, diagnostics, development, design, and decision-making—saving time and money in ways that compound quickly.

The real difference isn’t whether AI is good or bad. It’s whether you learn how to use it.

You don’t need to master everything at once.

Just start. Use it. Test it. Break it. Learn where it works—and where it doesn’t.

This isn’t about replacing skill. It’s about multiplying it.

You can evolve with it—or not. But either way, this shift is happening.

AI is here. Learn something about it every day.

(If you haven’t read it yet, there’s a solid Fortune article about this exact moment we’re in—worth your time.)

It’s not like a light switch... more like the moment you realize the water has been rising around you and is now at your chest.

Why Everything Feels Worse: Ensh*ttification is Real

You’ve probably noticed it—apps getting bloated, websites filled with ads, prices going up while service goes down. That’s not in your head. It’s called ensh*ttification.

Big tech companies start by offering something useful. Then they slowly make it worse to squeeze out more profit:

Your favorite search engine is now 80% ads.

Social media feeds show you junk instead of friends.

Amazon buries real products under junk listings.

PC part vendors raise prices while cutting quality or warranty.

This isn’t about progress. It’s about platforms turning hostile once they lock in users.

At NERDS PC, we do the opposite:
No prebuilt traps. No surprise fees. No bloat.
You get straight answers, custom-built hardware, and actual support—because we’re builders, not middlemen.

If you’re tired of the ensh*ttification of everything, build with someone who still gives a damn.

As we move into the new year, we want to thank everyone who supported NERDS Custom Computers over the past year. Demand for custom systems has been strong, and we appreciate the trust our customers continue to place in us.

We also want to be transparent about current component pricing. DDR memory prices continue to rise due to supply constraints and market changes, and this is already impacting the cost of new PC builds and upgrades. These increases are outside of our control and affect builders and consumers industry-wide.

If you are planning a new system or an upgrade this year, earlier planning can help avoid higher costs as prices continue to adjust. We will always provide clear quotes and upfront pricing so there are no surprises.

Thank you again for your continued support. We look forward to building and supporting more systems in the year ahead.

Thank you to everyone for an outstanding year. The support for NERDS Custom Computers has been strong, and we appreciate every customer who trusted us with their builds and upgrades.

Our assembly schedule is now officially full for the remainder of this year. Any new orders placed from this point forward will be scheduled for completion in the new year. If you want to secure a spot in the upcoming queue, now is the time to get your parts lists submitted. Prices on RAM continue to rise, and waiting may make certain builds more expensive.

Thank you again for a great year. We look forward to building more systems and working with more of you in the new year.

Bring your own parts and have your system assembled by a professional technician. NERDS can build, test, cable-manage, and update the system so it is ready to use the moment you pick it up. This service is for customers who already bought parts during Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales or found deals they want to use.

Assembly includes:
• Full hardware installation
• Thermal paste application and cooler seating
• Cable routing and cleanup
• BIOS update when supported
• System power-on test
• Windows installation if the customer provides a license

Pricing is based on the complexity of the build. Contact us with your parts list for an exact quote.

Black Friday deals are starting to roll in, but there’s a catch this year that many shoppers miss. A lot of budget and mid-range laptops now come with soldered RAM, and in some cases even soldered storage. That means no adding more memory later and no swapping to a larger SSD if you outgrow what’s included.

Before you grab a laptop just because it’s on sale, check whether the RAM is upgradeable and whether the SSD uses a standard M.2 slot. Some newer models only offer fixed memory with no expansion options at all.

If you want help figuring out which models can still be upgraded, send me the link or model number and I’ll break down what can or can’t be changed.
