A few weeks ago I saw a call for entries for a local art show just a couple minutes from my house.
There was only one problem:
I didn’t have anything to submit.
Instead of digging through old work, I decided to make something entirely new. So I picked a photo, sketched out an idea, opened Illustrator, and started building.
What followed was a lot of experimenting, second-guessing, tweaking colors, adjusting compositions, and wondering if the piece would ever become what I saw in my head.
But eventually it did.
Last week I dropped off the finished piece, and today it’s hanging on the wall as part of Rosewood Arts Center’s “Cats for All” community exhibition.
It’s not a huge milestone in the grand scheme of things, but it feels significant to me. This is my first local art show, and it reminded me how important it is to stop waiting until you’re ready.
Sometimes you sign up first and figure it out later.
