Scientists renamed human genes after Excel repeatedly misread them as dates.

Certain gene symbols — such as “MARCH1” and “SEPT2” — were routinely converted by spreadsheet software into date formats like “1-Mar” and “2-Sep.” Because Microsoft Excel is widely used in biological research, these automatic conversions introduced errors into datasets, often without being immediately detected.

The scale of the problem was significant.

An analysis of thousands of published studies found that nearly 20% of genetic datasets contained Excel-related errors, including misconverted gene names. In some cases, these errors propagated through supplementary data and into downstream analyses.

To address this, the Human Genome Organisation updated the official names of several genes, replacing formats prone to conversion with alternatives that remain stable in spreadsheet software.

For example, gene symbols like “MARCH1” were revised to forms such as “MARCHF1.”

The decision reflects a practical constraint in modern research workflows. While spreadsheet software is not designed for genomic data, it remains deeply embedded in how data is handled, shared, and published.

Although newer versions of Excel now include options to disable automatic data conversion, the renaming effort underscores a broader issue: widely used tools can introduce systematic errors into scientific data if their limitations are not accounted for.

In this case, the solution was not to change the software — but to standardize the data around it.

😱 Did the latest Windows update "break" your computer?

Did it kill your internet and networking connections?

If you suddenly can't get online today, here's how to fix it:

Here's how to roll it back to fix your machine:

- Use the Windows search bar to quickly go to "View Update History"

- Scroll down to "Uninstall updates" and click it

- Find the most recent update by date, and uninstall it. Anything dated April 1 or 2 should go.

- Restart your computer.

That should get you back online for now!

We also recommend pausing auto-updates for a few days (from the main Windows Update setting page). Wait for Microsoft to make the next version available (with the fix for this glitch) and update then.

Until next time — Safe surfing everybody! 😁

Shout-out to my fellow old-school em dash users!!!

I love — LOVE — the em dash.

I use it so much that I have the Alt-code memorized (Alt-0151).

And the en dash – (Alt-0150).

Just because you see an em dash doesn't always mean it was written by an LLM ("AI") 😉

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2025

There was a major Cloudflare outage overnight that temporarily took down millions of websites worldwide.

Between 3:30 am and 6:00 am, social media was flooded with reports of downed websites and broken website functionality.

We will continue to monitor and track these outages as they occur.

Happy Uninterrupted Surfing, Everybody!

Whoops!!! We Messed Up! 🫠⚠️ (But we have a good reason!)

We accidentally flooded our WPPro builder clients' inboxes with 30+ copies of a single email today. 🆘😬

That is 💯 not what we meant to do. 😱

📨𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘞𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘌𝘮𝘢𝘪𝘭

It's a new monthly ⬆️uptime⬆️ report for websites hosted in our Webbed Presence Pro builder!

We've recently implemented updated website monitoring.

This augments what we already had in place, to ensure that we'll be alerted immediately anytime one of our websites unexpectedly goes down.

Given recent major outages at Cloudflare and Amazon Web Services — which cascaded across the entire Internet — this new monthly report enables us to:
👍 Track patterns in the outages,
👍 Monitor our system's performance, and
👍 Provide our clients with the data and peace of mind to know that their sites are online and available when their site visitors need them.

During the recent global Internet outage on October 20, 2025, only a handful of WPPro-hosted websites went down, and each blip lasted less than three minutes.

This is a very minor disruption given the size and impact of that outage. 🦾

That said, these events appear to be occurring more often, so we felt it was necessary to add another monitor to our processes.

We're not thinking of it as a backup. Monitoring services are affected by outages too.

📰𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘈𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴?

Our WordPress clients already receive a monthly uptime report.

Our secondary service is checking our WordPress sites too, but they don't need two emails telling them they had 99.98 to 100% uptime. 😉

But for everyone else....

They'll now receive this uptime report on the first of every month — 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦! 😅😇
